MACON, Ga. – Senior Megan McCallister scored the golden goal on a penalty kick to lift Western Carolina to a 1-0 double-overtime victory at Mercer Sunday at Betts Stadium.
The key Southern Conference win pushed the Catamounts to the No. 4 seed heading into the Southern Conference Championships. WCU will host No. 5 seed Furman at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
Turning Point:
In a scoreless match, Mercer was flagged with two yellow cards one on a player and one on the team setting up a penalty kick for the Catamounts. McCallister converted on the PK to give WCU the victory.
Individual Leaders
- McCallister scored the lone goal of the match off a penalty kick to secure the win for the Catamounts.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Natalia Icen earned the shutout in goal and did not face a shot on goal from the Bears.
- McCallister and Regan Ward each had four shots in the game.
Inside the Box Score
- Western Carolina's defense was stifling. Although Mercer took 16 shots in the game, the Bears did not connect on a shot that found its way to a shot on goal.
- With under three minutes left in double overtime, Mercer's Abigail Zoeller was flagged with a yellow card inside the Bear's box and the Mercer's team was also given a yellow card. This set up a penalty kick for the Catamounts. McCallister took the PK shooting the ball into the left side of the net for the score.
- Western Carolina had 14 shots in the match.
- Goalkeeper Icen improved to 2-4-1 on the season.

- After failing to win a road game all season, Western Carolina closed out the regular season with back-to-back road victories.

- ETSU, Western Carolina and Furman all finished 5-4 in the regular season. ETSU, who fell to The Citadel 2-1 in double-overtime Sunday, earned the No. 3 seed by a tiebreaker. Western Carolina's 1-0 win against Mercer on Sunday, also in double-overtime, moved the Catamounts into fourth, while Furman sits at No. 5.
