The Western Carolina women’s tennis team picked up its first win of the season Friday night against North Carolina A&T with a 6-1 decision. The match, which was originally scheduled for Friday afternoon, was forced indoors and delayed until 8 pm due to weather conditions in the Greensboro area.
Playing inside the Simkins Indoor Tennis Center, the Catamounts jumped out to a 1-0 lead after capturing the doubles point. Freshman Jordyn King and sophomore Lauren McCall teamed up at No. 2 to take a 6-3 victory to open the match. The Aggies responded with a 6-3 victory of their own at No. 1 doubles to even up the match. Freshman Carli Deehr and junior Alexa Webb took their match the distance and captured the doubles point with a 7-5 win at No. 3.
Sophomore Jordan Strickland started things off in singles as she quickly dispatched of her opponent at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Webb put the Catamounts ahead 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over her opponent at No. 5.
Deehr clinched the first team victory of her career as she claimed the No. 6 singles match with a 6-1, 3-6, 10-0 score.
The Aggies put their first point on the board with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 2 but King and McCall put the finishing touches on the victory with wins at No. 1 and No. 4, respectively. King took a 6-2, 6-3 victory while McCall won her match 6-2, 7-5.
The Catamounts will now head to Durham, N.C., to take on North Carolina Central at 1 pm Saturday afternoon.
