The Western Carolina women's tennis team opened up its 2018 Southern Conference campaign Saturday afternoon with a tough loss against UNCG, 4-3, in Greensboro, N.C. The Catamounts dropped the doubles point and then split the singles matches for a close 4-3 defeat. The match would later be changed to a 4-3 win for the Catamounts after UNCG had to forfeit the No. 6 singles match due to a protest that was upheld by the conference office.
UNCG jumped ahead with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles but freshman Jordyn King and sophomore Lauren McCall evened the scoreboard with a 6-4 win of their own at No. 2 doubles. The point came down to No. 1 and the Spartans were able to come away with a 6-4 win to clinch the tally.
UNCG went on to clinch the match with wins at No. 4, No. 6 (later forfeited) and No. 1 singles prior to WCU getting on the scoreboard. The Spartans won at No. 4, 6-0, 6-1, No. 6, 6-3, 6-1 and No. 1, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
WCU eventually picked up a point as King won her No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-4. Her doubles partner McCall followed up with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 3 before junior Alexa Webb closed out the match with a 7-6 (3), 1-6, 10-2 win at No. 5.
