AUBURN, Ala. -- Western Carolina softball split the Catamounts final day of the Wilson/DeMarini Classic Saturday shutting out UNCW 1-0 before falling to host and No. 12th ranked Auburn 5-0 in the nightcap at Jane B. Moore Field.
Turning Point
In a scoreless game, Western Carolina junior Madison Armstrong hit a one-out homerun over the left field wall for the only run in the game.
How it Happened
- With one out in the fourth inning, Armstrong took a 1-1 pitch and lifted it over the left field wall to put Western Carolina up 1-0.
- UNCW threatened to score twice in the game. In the bottom of the fourth UNCW led off with a triple but two pop-ups and a fly out ended the scoring threat.
- In the sixth inning, the Seahawks had runners at second and third but Catamount hurler Haley Brogden got a strikeout to end the inning.
Inside the Box Score
- In just her second career start Catamount rookie hurler Brogden tossed a three-hit shutout in a complete game that saw her strikeout six. She earned the first win of her career and improves to 1-1 on the year.
- Western Carolina strung together three hits in the game and gave up three to UNCW.
- The run for Western Carolina, in the fourth inning, halted a 25 inning scoring drought for the Catamounts.
- Armstrong hit her first homerun of the season against the Seahawks.
Turning Point
Auburn used big innings in the second and third, scoring three in the second and two in the fourth, to shut out the Catamounts for the win.
How it Happened
- The 12th ranked Tigers used two homeruns in the second inning to build a 3-0 lead. Auburn tacked on two more runs in the third inning. Auburn looked like it would add more runs in the third with bases loaded and no outs but Catamount pitcher Lily Hayes worked out of the jam with two fly outs and a strikeout.
- Auburn pitcher Makayla Martin tossed three innings of a perfect game before she was lifted prior to the fourth inning. The Catamounts broke up the perfect game by Auburn's pitching staff when Armstrong hit a single in the fourth.
- The Catamounts had its only real scoring chance in the sixth inning when Erica Hayes hit a one-out double and Armstrong followed with a single. With WCU runners on first and third, the scoring threat ended when Shaina Reed hit into a fielder's choice and Armstrong was out at second for the third out.
Inside the Box Score
- L. Hayes tossed a complete game for Western Carolina and takes the loss falling to 0-4 on the year. She gave up five runs on six hits and struck out one.
- After giving up 11 hits to Auburn in the Friday night meeting, Western Carolina only gave up six hits to the Tigers in Saturday's game. Western Carolina had four hits.
- Armstrong had two of Western Carolina's four hits in the game.

- Western Carolina has scored one run over the last 36 innings and been shut out in four of the last five games.
- Hunter Gibbons' single against Auburn on Saturday was the centerfielder's first hit in six games.
