JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team dropped its second Southern Conference match of the season Wednesday afternoon as the Catamounts traveled to mountain rival ETSU. The match, which was originally scheduled to be held outdoors, was moved inside to the Bristol Racquet Club due to inclement weather in the Johnson City area. The Buccaneers blanked the Catamounts 7-0 despite many of the matches being tightly contested.
The Buccaneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches. All three doubles contests were close as the Buccaneers won at No. 1 and No. 3, 6-4 and at No. 2, 7-5.
The Catamounts fell behind 2-0 as Alejandra Morales defeated Alexa Webb 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. A 6-2, 6-4 loss at No. 3 by Lauren McCall put the Bucs ahead 3-0 and just one win away for a victory.
The clinch would come at No. 1 as Alory Pereira took down sophomore Jordan Strickland 7-5, 6-4. Freshman Jordyn King put up a strong fight at No. 2 as she went to three sets against Ionna Markesini. Markesini eventually won 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The final two matches to be completed came at No. 5 as Savannah Taranto fell 6-3, 6-0 and at No. 6 where Carli Deehr dropped her match 6-2, 6-1.
The Catamounts will return to action Sunday, March 25 as WCU hosts Wofford at 2 pm in more Southern Conference action.
