Box Score

Spartanburg, S.C. - Junior LHP Tristan Baker struck out a career-high 10 batters on Friday night, but it was not enough as Wofford rode an early lead to a 5-3 victory over Western Carolina in game two of the three-game Southern Conference series at Russell C. King Field.

Friday evening's win coupled with Thursday's 6-5 victory in 11 innings gave the Terriers the series win over WCU, its first over the Catamounts since 2012.

Western Carolina's seven hits were spread between seven different hitters. Cameron Blaquiere stretched his hitting streak to nine-consecutive games with a lead-off single in the fourth inning, finishing 1-for-4. Luke Robinson reached base twice in a 1-for-3 showing, drawing WCU's lone walk of the game.

Justin Sparks (1-for-4) and Matthew Koehler (1-for-3) both recorded an RBI, while pinch hitter Kitt Capell drove in a run on his lone hit of the game in WCU's two-run seventh.

Wofford (19-9, 3-2 SoCon) scored all the runs it would need between the second and fourth innings before holding off the WCU rally over the final three frames. Lawson Hill drove in the first run in the second inning on a third-consecutive base hit for the Terriers to make it 1-0. Wofford stretched its lead in the third, pushing across three runs on four hits to lead 4-0 through three innings.

The Terriers tacked on an insurance marker in the fourth as Colin Davis doubled down the left field line before advancing on consecutive fly ball outs, the second on a sacrifice fly by Mack Nathanson.

With just three hits and four total base runners through the first six frames, WCU finally got its offense on track in the seventh. Luke Robinson led off with a walk before Caleb Robinson dropped a one-out bunt single down the third base line with Sparks loading the bases on a single through the left side. Koehler then punched one up the middle that nearly got through for a base hit, driving in a run but forcing an out at second base. With runners at the corners, Capell singled to right field to cut the deficit to three, 5-2.

Down to its final three outs and trailing by three, WCU (3-22, 1-4 SoCon) put its lead-off man in the ninth inning on second base as Justice Bigbie singled and took second on a throwing error. He later came home on a RBI ground out by Sparks to third, but the Catamounts were unable to sustain the momentum in the loss.

Baker (1-3) was the tough-luck loser on the mound for the Catamounts on Friday, scattering the five runs on nine hits over a season-long 7.2 innings of work. The Charlotte, N.C., native worked around three walks with the career-high 10 strikeouts. After allowing the fifth run in the bottom of the fourth inning, Baker put the Wofford line-up on lockdown over the next four-plus innings, retiring 14 Terrier batters in a row including six on strikeouts.

Redshirt sophomore Blake Therrian recorded the final out of the eighth inning with a strikeout.

Wofford starter Adam Scott (4-2) limited WCU to two runs on six hits, striking out seven with just one walk. His first strikeout of the day made him the all-time leader in Wofford baseball history, breaking the tie with former Terrier, Matthew Millburn.

Max McDougald paced the Terriers with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate while Colin Davis doubled twice in a 2-for-4 showing, scoring twice.

The three-game SoCon series concludes on Saturday afternoon with a 2:00 pm first pitch at King Field.
