Softball Drops Pair of Games to UNCG

CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Western Carolina softball dropped a pair of Southern Conference games Friday falling to UNCG 12-2, in five innings, and 3-0 at the Catamount Softball Complex.

Turning Point
UNCG scored 12 runs over the course of five innings, including a big nine-run fourth inning.

How it Happened
- After two scoreless innings, UNCG got on the board first plating a run in the top of the third.
- The Spartans exploded for nine runs in the top of the fourth inning including a three-run homerun by Stephanie Bryden.
- The Catamounts got on the board in the bottom of the fourth off the bat of freshman Danielle Chapman who hit the first homerun of her Catamount career.
- UNCG tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth.
- WCU pushed across its second run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Ashlyn Long led off with a single to left field and advanced all the way to third on a UNCG error. With two outs, Kailey McNeil drew a walk to continue the inning. The Spartans second error of the inning allowed Kassandra Flores to reach first and Long to score.

Inside the Box Score
- Long has two of Western Carolina's five hits in the game.
- Junior Catamount pitcher Lily Hayes got the start and went 3.2 innings giving up 10 runs on six hits, walked five and struck out three. L, Hayes falls to 3-7 on the year.
- Sophomore pitcher Kinsey Liscio replaced L. Hayes and closed out the game throwing 1.1 innings giving up two runs on two hits and struck out one. - Western Carolina left eight runners on base in the game.

Turning Point
Two UNCG homeruns was the difference in the game as the Spartans had a two-run shot in the fourth and a solo shot in the fifth.

How it Happened
- After four scoreless innings, UNCG got out to a 2-0 lead off a two-run homerun in the fourth inning. - The Spartans followed with a solo homerun in the top of the fifth.

Inside the Box Score
- Western Carolina had a total of four baserunners in the game off a pair of hits and two walks.
- Liscio got the start in game two tossing a complete game giving up three runs on six hits and struck out one. She falls to 2-4 on the year.
- Erica Hayes and Shaina Reed each had a hit in the game.

News & Notes
- Western Carolina had its four-game winning streak snapped with the loss in game one against UNCG. - Chapman hit the first homerun of her Catamount career. She is the seventh different Catamount to hit a homerun this season.
- E. Hayes had her six-game hitting streak snapped after failing to get a hit in game one against UNCG.
- Western Carolina has hit at least one homerun in a game in five of the last seven games.
