RICHMOND, Ky. - Western Carolina softball dropped a pair of games in the opening day of the EKU Invitational. The Catamounts fell to host EKU 16-0, in five innings, and went down to Saint Louis 5-1 in the nightcap.
Turning Point
EKU plated a total of 13 runs in the first two innings, including a grand-slam and a three-run homerun, jumping on Western Carolina early and often to put the game out of reach.
How it Happened
- EKU scored a total of 13 runs, seven in the first and six in the second, and another three runs in the game to shorten the contest to five innings.
Inside the Box Score
- Three different pitchers saw action in the game for the Catamounts with Kinsey Liscio getting the start. Liscio only got one out in the first inning giving up six runs on one hit and walked four. She takes the loss and falls to 2-3 on the year.
- Junior pitcher Lily Hayes replaced Liscio and went 1.1 innings allowing seven runs on seven hits, two strikeouts and walked four.
- Freshman pitcher Haley Brogden finished out the game tossing 1.1 innings giving up three runs on three hits, walking three and striking out three. -
Ten of EKU's runs came off homeruns.
- Western Carolina pitchers combined for nine walks in the game.
- Shaina Reed's one-out single in the top of the fifth halted EKU's no-hitter attempt. It was the second straight game Western Carolina avoided being no-hit with a single in the final frame of the game.
Turning Point
Saint Louis scored a pair of runs in the first inning and added three more runs in the course of the game.
How it Happened
- A Catamount error allowed a run and Saint Louis added an RBI single to take the early 2-0 lead after the first inning. - The Billikens added a run in the top of the fifth.
- Saint Louis tacked on two more runs off a homerun in the top of the sixth.
- Western Carolina avoided the shutout scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh. A Billiken error and a single by Erica Hayes pushed runners at the corners. E. Hayes stole second and pinch-hitter Lauren Maynor stole home for the score.
Inside the Box Score
- Brogden made her second appearance of the day getting her third career start against Saint Louis. She tossed her second complete game of the season falling to 1-2 on the year. Brogden gave up six hits, five runs, two earned, walked four and struck out five.
- Western Carolina had seven hits in the game.
- Reed went 3-for-3 in the game.
- The Catamounts had three errors in the contest.

- EKU's 16 runs in the game ties for the most runs given up by Western Carolina in program history. - Western Carolina strung together multiple hits, for the first time in two games, with seven against Saint Louis.
- Madison Armstrong pushed her streak of consecutive games on base to eight straight with a walk against EKU and a free pass against Saint Louis.
