CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Western Carolina softball dropped a non-conference contest with Charlotte 7-3 Wednesday Sue M. Daughtirdge Stadium.
Turning Point
Charlotte scored two quick runs in the first inning and went on to score a total of five runs in the fourth and fifth inning.
How it Happened
- Charlotte scored two quick runs in the bottom of the first.
- The 49ers extended their lead with four runs in the fourth to lead 6-0.
- Western Carolina cut Charlotte's lead in half plating three runs in the top of the fifth. With one out Erica Hayes singled to left center. Abigail Daniels followed with a single down the right-field line and went on to steal second to put Catamount runners at second and third. Hunter Gibbons walked to load the bases setting up Ashlyn Long's two-RBI ground out to second base. Gibbons scored off a Charlotte error.
- Charlotte tacked on its seventh run in the bottom of the fifth.
Inside the Box Score
- Charlotte had 11 hits in the game and Western Carolina ended the game with five.
- Freshman hurler Haley Brogden got her second straight start going four innings allowing six runs on eight hits and struck out three. She falls to 2-4 on the year.
- Brogden was replaced by Kinsey Liscio to start the fifth inning who closed out the game. Liscio went two innings allowing one run on three hits and struck out one.
- Senior Daniels went 2-for-4 in the game and scored a run. -
Charlotte committed four errors in the game.
News & Notes
- Since returning to the starting lineup six games ago, in the second game of the doubleheader with USC Upstate, Daniels has a .429 batting average with six hits, three runs scored three runs, had one RBI and hit two doubles. She has also reached base safely in the last five games.
- Gibbons' walk in the game extends her on-base streak to 16 straight - the longest one base streak of the season.
- Western Carolina is suffering through a six-game losing streak.
- Western Carolina's loss to Charlotte halts an eight-game win streak against the 49ers.

Western Carolina continues its four-game road swing with a three-game Southern Conference series at Samford April 14-15. The Catamounts and Bulldogs will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. EST and a 2 p.m. EST finale Sunday.
