CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Strong pitching, spectacular defensive plays and timely hitting helped lead Western Carolina softball to a 6-1, 2-1 doubleheader sweep of visiting Winthrop Tuesday at the Catamount Softball Complex.
Turning Point
Western Carolina jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first and held Winthrop scoreless until allowing one run in the sixth.
How it Happened
- The Catamounts scored three runs in the bottom of the first which all started with a two-out error by the Eagles allowing sophomore Ashlyn Long to reach first. Madison Armstrong followed with a double and both Long and Armstrong scored off a two-RBI double by Shaina Reed. Addie Pate followed with an RBI double of her own to score Reed.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Western Carolina tacked on three more runs. The Catamounts got things started with three straight hits: singles by Abigail Daniels and Long and an RBI double by Armstrong which scored Daniels. Reed hits a sacrifice fly RBI to score Long and Armstrong scored off a double by Pate.
- The Catamounts rode the arm of freshman hurler Haley Brogden and strong defensive plays to hold Winthrop scoreless until the top of the sixth.
- In the top of the sixth, Winthrop halted Brogden's shutout attempt scoring a run in the sixth.
Inside the Box Score
- Brogden tossed a complete game going a full seven innings giving up one unearned run, allowing five hits and struck out five. She improves to 4-5 on the year.
- Western Carolina had seven hits in the game and Winthrop had five.
- Pate went 2-for-3 in the game with a pair of doubles.
Turning Point
Tied 1-1, Reed hit a lead-off homerun to break up the tie and propel Western Carolina to the win.
How it Happened
- With two outs, in a scoreless game, Danielle Chapman hit a two-out homerun to give WCU the early 1-0 lead.
- After going scoreless through five innings, Winthrop tied the game with one swing of the bat when pinch hitter Morgan Lowers hit a one-out homerun.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Reed gave the Catamounts the lead back when she hit a lead-off homerun.
Inside the Box Score
- Sophomore hurler Kinsey Liscio tossed the complete game giving up one run on four hits and struck out three. Liscio improves to 3-7.
- The Catamounts had eight hits in the game and Winthrop had four.
- Long and Reed each had a pair of hits in the game.
- Both of Western Carolina's runs in the game were off homeruns. News & Notes - Western Carolina picked up its second doubleheader sweep of the season.
- The Catamounts' sweep of Winthrop was the first for WCU in the meetings between the two teams. - Chapman's homerun was the third of her career while Reed's was her fourth of the year.
