Softball Blasts Through North Carolina A&T For Pair of Wins

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Western Carolina softball picked up its second-straight doubleheader sweep Wednesday powering past North Carolina A&T 10-5, 14-6 at the Aggie Softball Complex.


Turning Point
Tied 3-3, Western Carolina scored seven runs over the course of the middle innings of the fifth and sixth inning to pull away from the Aggies.

How it Happened
- North Carolina A&T took the early 1-0 lead scoring a run in the bottom of the second.
- Western Carolina answered in the top of the third scoring three runs. Emily Castro got things started with a single to left field. Erica Hayes followed with a single of her own. Abigail Daniels reached first on an Aggie error and Castro scored off the miscue. After Daniels stole second Hayes scored off a wild pitch. With two outs, Daniels scored on the second NC A&T wild pitch of the inning.
- The Aggies added two runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game 3-3.
- After a scoreless fourth inning, the Catamounts plated three runs in the top of the fifth. Hayes singled and Daniels walked to put runners on first and second. With one out, Long hammered a shot to left field for an RBI which scored Hayes. Madison Armstrong followed with a two-RBI single but was out on the play in the rundown back to first.
- The Catamounts put the hammer down in the top of the sixth extending their lead with four runs. Castro led off with a single and Kailey McNeil followed with a double. With one out, Daniels hit an RBI single scoring Castro and McNeil scored off an RBI single by Hunter Gibbons. WCU loaded the bases when Long reached on an error. Armstrong hit a sacrifice fly RBI to score Daniels and Gibbons followed by stealing home for the fourth run.
- NC A&T did score a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Inside the Box Score
- Brogden tossed her second-straight complete game and improves to 5-5 on the year. She gave up five runs, four earned, on 10 hits, walked one and struck out four.
- The Catamounts had 14 hits in the game.
- Hayes, Armstrong, Chapman, McNeil and Castro each had a pair of hits in the game.
- Every Catamount in the line-up got a hit in the game.

Turning Point
Western Carolina wasted no time jumping on top of the Aggies scoring 13 runs over the first three innings of the game ending with 14 runs for the game.

How it Happened
- Western Carolina exploded for seven runs to open the game in the top of the first. Hayes led it off with a single past the shortstop and Daniels followed by reaching on an error. Long doubled down the left side to score Hayes and Armstrong followed with a double of her own - a two-RBI shot scoring Daniels and Long. With one out, Addie Pate singled followed by an RBI double by Kailey McNeil. Castro closed out the scoring in the inning with her first homerun of the season -- a two-RBI knock.
- North Carolina A&T answered with a run in the bottom of the first and a second run in the bottom of the second.
- The third inning saw Western Carolina tack on six more runs with five of the runs off homeruns. McNeil got the scoring started with a lead-off homerun. Castro and Lauren Maynor drew back-to-back walks and Hayes reached on an error to load the bases. Daniels hit a sacrifice RBI to score Castro and a third Aggie walk in the inning to Long loaded the bases again. Armstrong took advantage of the loaded bases with a grand-slam to right center.
- In the bottom of the third, NC A&T hit its second homerun of the game - a three-run shot. The Aggies would add its sixth run of the game off its third homerun of the game in the bottom of the fourth.
- The Catamounts added their 14th run of the game in the top of the seventh.

Inside the Box Score
- Catamount pitcher Kinsey Liscio got the start and went four innings to take the win improving to 4-7. She gave up six runs on eight hits and struck out six.
- Freshman Kayla Brewer replaced Liscio to start the fifth and tossed three scoreless innings giving up just one hit and earned the first pair of strikeouts in her young career. - Western Carolina had 10 hits and NC A&T had nine. -
Hayes, Armstrong, Pate, McNeil and Castro each had a pair of hits in the game.
- North Carolina A&T committed six errors in the game.

News & Notes
- Armstrong hit her first grand-slam of the season, and first for the team, and the second of her career.
- Armstrong moves up to a tie for seventh place in the Catamount record books with 25 career doubles.
- Four the second time this season Western Carolina is on a four-game winning streak and won its first back-to-back doubleheaders of the season.
- Over the last four games, Western Carolina is hitting .328 as a team and has four players hitting above .400. The Catamounts scored 32 runs in the four games and had five homeruns and had 39 hits. Also in those four games, Armstrong had five hits, scored four runs, had three doubles, a homerun, and 10 RBI.
- Shaina Reed and Ashlyn Long are both on five-game hitting streaks.

Up Next
Western Carolina travels to Furman this weekend for a three-game Southern Conference series with the Paladins. Saturday's pair of games are set to begin at 1 p.m. and the finale is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday.
