GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Western Carolina softball dropped a pair of games to Furman Saturday falling 8-0 in five innings in both contests at Pepsi Stadium.
Turning Point
Furman scored eight runs over five innings, including five runs in the bottom of the fourth, to shorten the game to five innings.
How it Happened
- The Paladins got on the board in the bottom of the first plating two runs.
- After Catamount pitcher Haley Brogden got two shutdown innings in the second and third innings, the Paladins exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
- The Paladins scored the game-ending run in the bottom of the fifth.
Inside the Box Score
- Brogden got the start in the game and lasted three innings giving up six runs on five hits, walked three and struck out three. Brogden falls to 5-6 on the year.
- Brogden was replaced by Kayla Brewer who tossed 1.1 innings giving four hits and two runs.
- Western Carolina avoided the no-hitter when Madison Armstrong hit a double in the top of the second.
Turning Point
In a repeat of game one, Furman took an early lead scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and went on to hold Western Carolina scoreless and add six more runs over the ensuing four innings to close out the game.
How it Happened
- Just like in game one, Furman took the early lead scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.
- The Paladins tacked on their third run off a solo homerun.
- After Western Carolina held Furman scoreless for three innings, the Paladins tacked on three more runs off the second homerun of the game for Furman - a three-run homerun and added a seventh run in the game off an RBI double. An RBI single, also in the sixth inning, shorten the game to five innings.
Inside the Box Score
- Sophomore Kinsey Liscio started the game in the circle and went one inning giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits and walked one. Liscio falls to 4-8 on the year.
- Brogden replaced Liscio and tossed three scoreless innings before giving up five runs in the bottom of the sixth. She ended the game giving up six hits and striking out five.
- Western Carolina had three hits in the game and Furman had 10.
- Hunter Gibbons, Addie Pate, and Danielle Chapman each had hits in the game.
News & Notes
- Western Carolina had their four-game winning streak snapped with the 8-0 loss to Furman in game one of the doubleheader.
- With Armstrong's double in game one, she now has 14 for the season moving her into a tie for second place in the WCU record books for doubles in a season. She is now chasing teammate Gibbons who holds the record with 16.
