CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Western Carolina women's tennis dropped a hard-fought match at Chattanooga 5-2 Saturday at Strang Vorges Tennis Center in the Catamounts final Southern Conference road match of the season.
Western Carolina falls to 9-8 on the season and 2-4 in Southern Conference play while the Mocs improve to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the SoCon.
The Catamounts got off to an early 1-0 lead, in the match, taking the doubles point 2-1. The Combo of Savannah Taranto and Jordan Strickland won at No. 1 doubles 6-1 and Jordyn King and Lauren McCall took the win 6-2 at No. 2 doubles to get WCU off on a positive note.
Strickland gave Western Carolina a 2-0 lead when she finished off the Mocs' Delaney Edwards 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
Chattanooga would tie the match 2-2 getting wins at No. 5 and No. 1 singles. It would be a battle all around in the remaining singles matches.
Number three, four and six singles all went to three sets with the Mocs coming out on top in all three. However, it was an all-out war by Lauren McCall, Taranto and Carli Deehr who all three battled down the stretch and fell in heartbreaking fashion.
Western Carolina's scheduled match with Campbell at home on Sunday was canceled earlier in the week. The Catamounts now turn their attention to the final two home games of the season hosting Mercer in a SoCon match at 11 a.m. Friday and closing out the regular season hosting Young Harris at noon on Saturday.
