CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Western Carolina softball dropped the Southern Conference doubleheader with Chattanooga 10-2, in five innings, and 4-2 Sunday at the Catamount Softball Complex.
Turning Point
Chattanooga scored in four of the five innings played in the shortened five-inning game due to the run rule.
How it Happened
- Chattanooga scored six of its runs in the first two innings and went on to score a run in the fourth and three in the fifth.
- Western Carolina avoided the shutout scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth and was a hairs breath away from scoring a third run to extend the game past five innings. With two outs sophomore Erica Hayes got the rally started with a single past second base. Abigail Daniels followed with a walk and Hunter Gibbons scored E. Hayes off an RBI single down the right side. Ashlyn Long picked up an RBI scoring Gibbons when she singled down the right side. The inning and the game were over when Daniels attempted to score on Long's single and was thrown out at home.
Inside the Box Score
- Freshman pitcher Haley Brogden got the start and went 4.1 innings giving up 10 runs on 12 hits and struck out two. She falls to 2-3 on the season.
- Brogden was replaced by Lily Hayes with one out in the fifth inning and she tossed two-thirds of scoreless ball and struck out one.
- E. Hayes and Long each had a pair of hits in the game.
Turning Point
After Western Carolina took a 2-1 lead after four innings, Chattanooga scored three runs in the top of the sixth and hold on for the win.
How it Happened
- Chattanooga took the early 1-0 lead when Alyssa Coppinger led off with a single and scored courtesy of an RBI single by J.J. Hamill.
- The Catamount took their only lead of the game scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Daniels and Gibbons led off the inning with back-to-back singles and Daniels scored off Chattanooga error off an errant through by the Mocs after Gibbons single. Gibbons scored when Kassandra Flores hit an RBI single down the first base line that floated just above the leaping Mocs first baseman.
- The Mocs retook the lead for good scoring three runs in the top of the sixth.
Inside the Box Score
- Junior pitcher L. Hayes got the start tossing her sixth complete game of the season. She gave up four runs on 11 hits, did not walk a batter and struck out three. She falls to 4-11 on the year.
- Western Carolina had four hits in the game.
- Chattanooga left eight runners on base and WCU left five.
News & Notes
- Gibbons had a hit in each of the games of the doubleheader to extend her on-base streak to 15 straight which is the longest of the season.
- Western Carolina played seven games for the week with a record of 1-6. In that seven-game stretch, Gibbons hit .412 with seven hits, six runs scored, four homeruns and seven RBI.
- Gibbons was one of four Catamounts to hit .300 or above in the last seven games: Long (.368), Daniels (.333) and Kailey McNeil (.300).
- Gibbons has eight homeruns this season and pushes her career total to 25 moving her into second place in the WCU record books. She needs five homeruns to break the Catamount record.
