Plummer Paces Women's Golf to Third-Place Finish

Clarksville, Tenn. – Western Carolina senior Brianna Plummer rode a career-low, 54-hole score performance to a career-best finish as a pair of Catamounts tallied top-five finishes in a third-place showing as a team at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate which concluded Tuesday at the par-72, 5,965-yard Clarksville Country Club.

Plummer climbed three spots in the final round to finish third overall while redshirt freshman teammate Madison Isaacson moved into a tie for fourth overall, one stroke in arrears. The Catamount duo has opened the 2019-20 schedule with consecutive top-five individual performances including a medalist honors for Isaacson at the Judaculla Cup with Plummer posting a fourth-place showing as an individual at the same event, previously the best finish of her collegiate career.

Opening on the par-3 second on Tuesday, Plummer had an up-and-down final round that included countering six bogeys with five birdies to shoot 1-over par, 73. Sitting at 3-over par with six holes to play, the Shelby, N.C., native settled down to card three birdies over her next five holes and was poised to shoot even before a bogey on her final hole.

All told, Plummer finished with a tournament-best 11 birdies and was tied for the best par-3 scoring in the field at 2-under par (2.87).

Isaacson finished in a two-way tie for fourth with a three-round tally of 224, posting consistent rounds of 75, 74, and 75. The UNCW transfer from Greensboro, N.C., posted a trio of birdies on Tuesday. Overall, Isaacson was fourth in par-5 scoring at the event at 3-under (4.80).

Junior Maya White slipped two spots overall into a tie for 14th with a 54-hole score of 233, recovering from an 8-over par start with three consecutive birdies on the back nine as a part of eight in the tournament, finishing at 7-over, 79. She finished just ahead of freshman teammate Bailee Twiford in a tie for 16th at 235. Twiford finished second to Plummer in total birdies, carding 10 over the 54-hole tournament. Rounding out WCU's scoring five was junior Hazel Martin who came home in a tie for 33rd overall at 248.

With the top two individuals and three inside the individual top 10, second-round leader IUPUI stretched its lead in the winning effort, defeating tournament host Austin Peay by nine strokes, 900-to-909. WCU was third at 914 with Tennessee Tech (924) and Valparaiso (948) rounding out the top five teams.

Collectively, WCU led the nine-team field with 40 total birdies – 12 more than the second-place team.

Marion Debove of IUPUI edged her teammate Amelie Svejda by three strokes to claim individual medalist honors. Debove shot even-par, 216, while Svejda finished as the runner-up with a 3-over par tournament score of 219.

With a pair of top three team finishes in its first two events of the season, Western Carolina returns to action on Monday, Oct. 7 with the one-day, 36-hole Winthrop Fall Invitational at the Waterford Golf Club in Rock Hill, S.C.
