Three Score in Double Figures in WCU's Loss at Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball had three players score in double figures, and made a strong push in the second half, but couldn't escape the herculean scoring of Davidson in the first half as the Catamounts fell to the Wildcats 101-51 Wednesday in Belk Arena.

Turning Point:

Davidson outscored Western Carolina 31 to nine in the first quarter, hitting five three-pointers and shooting 55 percent in the opening 10 minutes of the contest. Overall the Wildcats outscored WCU 56-21 in the first half.

Individual Leaders

Sophomore Jewel Smalls led the Catamounts with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Redshirt Junior Lauren LaPlant and freshman Andrea Martin Ruiz each poured in 11 for the Catamounts.
Andrea Martin Ruiz also dished out a career-high seven assists.
Suzi Rose Deegan led five Davidson players in double figures with 16 points.

Inside the Box Score

Davidson shot a scorching 53.7 percent from the field. The Catamounts shot 33.3 percent.
The Wildcats connected on 14 three-pointers in the game while WCU hit seven.
Davidson just bested Western Carolina in rebounds as the Wildcats pulled down 43 to the Catamounts 38.
Not counting the 56-21 lead Davidson built in the first half, the Catamounts strung together a strong second half as the Wildcats outscored 45-30 with WCU winning the third quarter 20-17.
Davidson was sent to the free-throw line 20 times hitting 15. The Catamounts were awarded just four trips hitting two.

LaPlant scored in double figures for the first time this season.
Davidson broke the program record for most three-pointers in a game with 14 besting the previous mark of 13 set in the 2018-19 season.
Smalls strung together her fifth double-double of the season.
Andrea Martin Ruiz's 11 points are the second time in the year she has scored in double figures.
Senior Farasia Hodge picked up her first start of the season against Davidson.
Every Catamount eligible to play saw time on the court in the game.
The 101 points scored by Davidson is the most points allowed in a game by Western Carolina this season and the first time the Wildcats have scored 100 or more points in a game since 2002.
For the third time, this season Western Carolina had three or more players score in double figures in a game.
Western Carolina is now suffering through a six-game losing streak.
Earlier in the week, Smalls was named SoCon Player of the Week and at the same time, her men's basketball counterpart Mason Faulkner was named the men's SoCon Player of the Week. This is the first time since Kevin Martin and Tiffany Hamm in 2003 that a Catamount from the men's and women's basketball team was named conference Player of the Week in the same week.
