Catamounts Host Winthrop Saturday

Final game before holiday break

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball hosts Winthrop at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Ramsey Center before breaking for the holidays.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina and Winthrop meet for the 43rd time on Saturday. The two teams have a long history, but that history had a pause button on it until 2018. Before the two team's meeting in 2018, the Eagles and the Catamounts had not played since 2000. In the 2018 meeting, WCU won in Rock Hill, S.C. 65-57. Overall, the Catamounts are 31-11 against Winthrop. WCU is 18-9 in Cullowhee against the Eagles. WCU has won the last five meetings.
  •  The Catamount's last three games have been decided by seven points or less.
  • With 12 points against Tennessee Tech, Jewel Smalls pushes her consecutive double-figure scoring streak to nine-straight and 11 out of 12 games.
  • Western had four players score in double figures against Tennessee Tech. The last time that happened was the season opener against UVA-Wise.
  • Though the record doesn't reflect it, WCU has found some cohesiveness. Over the last four games, the Catamounts are averaging 62.5 points per game over nine points more per game than their overall average of 53.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT WINTHROP:
  • Winthrop halted a five-game losing streak with a 75-63 in over UNC Wilmington on Dec. 17.
  • The Eagles are 2-3 on the road this season.
  • Ja'Che Whitfield leads Winthrop averaging 11.6 points per game.
  •  Winthrop has faced one Southern Conference team already falling by one point to Wofford 60-59. The Eagles Miquela Santoro's attempted a three-point shot to win the game, but it fell short.
