Face off against Cougars Monday

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball returns to the hardwood at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the College of Charleston in TD Arena. The Catamounts face the Cougars after an eight-day break for the holidays.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina and College of Charleston meet for the 33rd time on Monday. The Catamounts face off against the former Southern Conference foe for the first time since the Cougars departed the SoCon after the 2013 season. In that last meeting in 2013, the College of Charleston defeated WCU 73-61 in Cullowhee. The Catamounts last win over CofC was Mar. 1, 2012 with a 59-45 victory in Cullowhee. Of course, the most epic game between the two teams came Mar. 9, 2009 in the finals of the SoCon Championships when the Catamounts defeated the Cougars 101-87 in three overtimes. Overall, WCU leads the series 24-18 and 10-10 in Charleston.
  • Redshirt junior Lauren LaPlant was named SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week Dec. 24 - the first honor in her career. Overall, it was the second time this season a Cata-mount has won the award as Jewel Smalls was honored on Dec. 11.
  • Jewel Smalls has scored in double figures in 10-straight games and 12 of 13 games played.
  • The Catamounts have hit at least five three-pointers in 12 of 13 games on the year and 10 or more in three games.
  • Though the record doesn't reflect it, WCU has found some cohesiveness. Over the last four games, the Catamounts are averaging 62.0 points per game almost nine points more per game more than their overall average of 53.5.
  • Smalls dropped to second in the NCAA for total rebounds with 149. Ila Lane from UC Santa Barbara took over frst place with 154. Smalls continues to lead the SoCon in most re-bounds for the season with the next closes conference opponent Tierra Hodges from Furman ripping down 105.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON:
  • College of Charleston defeated common opponent Winthrop, whom WCU just lost to, 84-73 on Dec. 1. The Cougars fell to Western Carolina's upcoming opponent and fellow SoCon member UNCG 69-56 Dec. 16. CofC bounced back from that loss to the Spartans by defeating Charleston Southern 79-70 before the holiday break.
  • Overall, the College of Charleston is 6-4 and 2-2 at home.
  • The Cougars are led by sophomore guard Latrice Perkins averaging 15.9 points per game. She is one of three College of Charleston players averaging in double figures. Perkins is followed by Tyler Collins (14.6) and Deja Ford (12.0). Ford was a CAA Preseason All-Conference Honorable Mention.
  • Just like Western Carolina, College of Charleston is also under the direction of a new Head Coach as Robin Harmony took over the program in April.
