Moates Scores Career-High 19 in Loss to Cougars

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Redshirt junior Tembre Moates scored a career-high 19 points as Western Carolina women's basketball closed out 2019 with a 73-62 lost at College of Charleston Monday in TD Arena.   
 
Turning Point:
With the game tied at 16, after a three-pointer by Lauren LaPlant to start the second quarter, College of Charleston outscored the Catamounts 22-11, hitting six three-pointers in the final seven minutes of the second to build a lead WCU could never recover from.  
 
Individual Leaders
  • Moates led all scorers with a career-high 19 points. 
  • Sophomore Jewel Smalls had 15 points in the game and eight rebounds. 
  • Freshman Diarra Smith was the third Catamount to score in double figures with a career-best 13 points. 
  • Deja Ford scored a team-best 16 points for College of Charleston. 
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Western Carolina gave up a season-high 15 three-pointers against the College of Charleston. 
  • The Catamounts committed 19 turnovers leading to 24 points for the Cougars.
  • Western Carolina trailed by only three points, 16-13, after the first quarter but couldn't answer College of Charleston's six three-pointers in the second quarter getting outscored 22-14.
  • The Catamounts did score in double figures in all four quarters including winning the fourth 22-15.
  • CofC just edged WCU in the rebounding department ripping down 39 to the Catamounts' 33. 
  • Western Carolina tied its season-high with 10 steals. 
  • The Catamounts shot 39.1 percent from the field while the Cougars were 40.1.

  • Redshirt junior LaPlant has hit at least one three-pointer in all 14 games on the season. 
  • With her 15 points in the game, Smalls has scored in double figures in 11-straight games and 13 of 14 games played.
  • Smith hit a career-high four three-pointers. 
  • WCU has hit seven or more three-pointers in 11 games on the season after draining nine against the Cougars. 
  • LaPlant's double-figure scoring streak was halted at five with nine points against the Cougars. 
  • The Catamounts have scored 60 or more points in five of the last six games. 
  • Smalls ripped down eight rebounds pushing her seasonal total to 157 - a new season-high for her. She continues to rank second in the NCAA for total rebounds. 
  • In the last six games, WCU is averaging 62 points per game eight points above its seasonal average of 54.1 points per game.
