Note:

The game began on Friday afternoon and was halted in the bottom of the third inning with the game tied at three. Two days later, on Sunday afternoon, the game resumed and was completed.

Turning Point

With the game tied at three, the two teams returned to the field on Sunday after the rain chased them away on Friday afternoon in the bottom of the third. The Skyhawks took the lead in the third which spurred four unanswered runs to take the win.

How it Happened

  • UT Martin took the early lead scoring three runs in the bottom of the first.
  • Western Carolina tied the game 3-3 in the top of the third. Lindsay Perrilo and Erica Hayes started the inning off on a strong note with back-to-back singles. Ashlyn Long hit the third single of the inning which came with an RBI as Perrilo scored. Hunter Gibbons would not be turned away as she also logged an RBI single plating Hayes. Long scored the third run of the inning courtesy of sacrifice RBI by Madison Armstrong.
  • When UT Martin began their half of the third on Sunday afternoon, they quickly retook the lead scoring a run. They were held to just one run in that inning when the Catamounts turned a rar triple play when a fly ball to left field was hauled in and a pair of runners were picked off at second and third to end the inning.
  • The Skyhawks went to extend its lead by scoring two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Inside the Box Score

  • Western Carolina had six hits in the game while UT Martin had 10.

  • UT Martin pitching sat down 11 straight Catamount batters from the fourth to the seventh inning. Huneycutt broke the streak by drawing a two-out walk but a groundout ended the inning and the game.

News & Notes

  • Western Carolina ended its opening weekend 2-3.
  • Gibbons is eyeing a pair of Western Carolina career records in the early days of her senior season. She is currently tied for the home run record with former Catamount Lauren Ross with 29. She is also looking to snap the RBI record with 104 in her career which is good for second place. She needs three RBI to take over first place from another celebrated Catamount Taylor Sigmon.
  • The Catamounts scored a total of 28 runs in the first five games of the season.
  • In the combined five games, Western Carolina had 11 extra base hits – eight doubles and three homeruns. Freshman Huneycutt hit four of the Catamounts' eight doubles.
