CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball moved into a tie for second place for three-pointers in a season, with 167, in the Catamounts 72-41 loss to ETSU Thursday in the Ramsey Center.  

Turning Point:

A 23-13 scoring output in the first period and holding Western Carolina to 17 points in the second half, helped ETSU skate past the Catamounts.

Individual Leaders:

• Freshman Jewel Smalls led the Catamounts with 16 points.
• Junior Farasia Hodge ripped down six rebounds.
• Micah Scheetz led the Buccaneers with a game-pacing 21 points.
• Judith Martin Ruiz dished out four assists for the Catamounts.

Inside the Box Score

• ETSU scored 40 of its points inside the paint.
• The Catamounts turned the ball over 23 times turning into 14 points for the Buccaneers.
• ETSU shot a scoring 47.5 percent from the field holding WCU to a chilly 28.6 percent.
• Western Carolina scored just 17 points in the second half, seven in the third and 10 in the fourth.
• ETSU ripped down 47 rebounds, 34 on the defensive end. Western Carolina had 33.
• The Buccaneers also got 19 of their points on second chances.

News & Notes

• With three three-pointers in the game against ETSU, the 2018-19 WCU team moves into a tie for second place for three-pointers in a season tying the Southern Conference Championship squad of 2008-09.
• Smalls has scored 305 points in the 2018-19 season which is the most by a Western Carolina women's basketball freshman since 2014-15 when Ace Easter ended her rookie campaign with 297. She also becomes the first Catamount freshman to score 300 or more points in a season since Lauren Powell in the 2005-06 campaign when she ended her first year as a Catamount with 328.
• Smalls has now scored in double figures in the last four games and a total of 15 times this season.

Upcoming

Western Carolina will play its final regular season home game of the season welcoming Chattanooga for a 2 p.m. tip-off in the Ramsey Center. Seniors Angel Allen and Kennedy Rushin will be honored prior to the game.
