CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina survived a wild and offensive explosive match against visiting UT Martin defeating the Skyhawks 5-4 Sunday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

Turning Point:

Western Carolina scored four first-half goals. 

Individual Leaders

  • Junior Regan Ward scored a goal and had an assist in the game.
  • Mackenzie Wright scored off a penalty kick. 
  • UT Martin's Jill Hildreth scored a pair of goals in the game. 

 

Inside the Box Score

  • UT Martin got on the board first scoring off an own goal in the eighth minute of the match. 
  • Eight minutes later, senior Kate Swartwout tied the match in the 16th match sending the ball in the goal from about 10 yards out from a double pass by Shannon Greenwood and Julia Winter
  • The Catamounts took the lead in the first half when senior Mackenzie Wright scored from a penalty kick after a foul inside the box at the 17th minute. 
  • UT Martin tied the match scoring in the 20th minute. 
  • Western Carolina answered scoring back-to-back goals in the final 14 minutes of the match. 
  • Junior Regan Ward scored an unassisted goal in the 31st minute and freshman Payton Creed found the back of the net in the 33rd minute with an assist by Ward. 
  • Four minutes into the second period, UT Martin cut the Catamount lead to 4-3 scoring at the 49th minute. 
  • Renee Saneholtz's goal for Western Carolina in the 73rd minute, with an assist by Ashton Cannon, turned out to be the game-clinching goal as UT Martin scored its third goal four minutes later. 
  • UT Martin cut the Catamount lead to one, 5-4, scoring a goal 76th minute. 
  • Western Carolina had 10 shots in the game while UT Martin had six. 
  • Junior Natalia Icen earned the win in goal and improves to 2-0 on the season.

  • Western Carolina's five goals in the match is tied for fourth place in the WCU record books and the most scored by a Catamount team since 2015.
