Regan Ward Scores Pair of Goals in Win over High Point

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Junior Regan Ward scored a pair of goals in Western Carolina women's soccer's 2-1 win over High Point Thursday at the Catamount Athletic Complex. 

Turning Point:

Western Carolina scored a goal in each half and fended off High Point after the Panthers hit a penalty kick late in the second half.

Individual Leaders

  • Ward just missed a hat trick scoring a pair of goals in the match. 
  • Redshirt freshman Shannon Greenwood had a career-high two assists in the game.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Melody Mezzina had six saves in the contest. 

 

Inside the Box Score

  • In the 24th minute of the first half, junior Ward took a pass from Greenwood sending a shot from 20-yards out on the right side and sent it above the Panther's goalkeeper and into the right top part of the net. 
  • At the 58th minute, Ward struck again in a déjà vu moment when she scored the Catamounts' second goal of the game again thanks to an assist by Greenwood. 
  • High Point avoided the shutout when the Panthers were awarded a penalty kick at 79:34. Ashlyn Kearney sailed it past Catamount goalie Mezzina for the Panther goal. 
  • The Panthers came within a hair's breathe of tying the match as the shot just grazed the top of the goal at the 87th minute of the match. 
  • Mezzina earned her third start in goal for the Catamounts improving to 2-1 on the season.  
  • Western Carolina had 19 shots in the game while High Point had 10.

  • Ward's pair of goals in the match is a career-high for the midfielder.
  • Western Carolina is 3-1 over the last four matches. 
  • The Catamounts remain undefeated against High Point improving their overall record against the Panthers to 3-0-2 and 3-0 in Cullowhee.
  • WCU is now 3-1 at home this season. 
  • The Catamounts 4-2 record to start the 2019 season is the best start for Western Carolina since the 2013 team also opened the season with a 4-2 record. 
  • With the two goals against High Point, Ward now leads the team with three goals on the season. 
  • Greenwood now leads the team with three assists on the year.
