Catamounts Give UNCG All Spartans Can Handle in Loss

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball gave UNCG all it could handle and more before falling to the Spartans 54-43 Saturday in Fleming Gym.
 
Turning Point:
Western Carolina closed out the first quarter leading UNCG 12-10 and the Spartans responded by outscoring WCU 16-11 in the second quarter parlaying that 26-23 lead at the half into double digits after the third quarter. The Catamounts battled back in the fourth but could not recover from the double-digit Spartan lead. 
 
Individual Leaders
  • Redshirt junior Tembre Moates scored a game-leading 16 points in the game going 8-of-12 from the field. 
  • Lauren LaPlant's three-pointer in the fourth quarter gave her 10 points in the game.
  • Andrea Martin Ruiz came off the bench to rip down six rebounds, dished out seven assists and scored four points in the game. 
  • UNCG's Alexus Willey was the only Spartan to score in double figures ending the game with 12 points. 
 
 
Inside the Box Score
  • After the Catamounts won the first quarter 12-10, UNCG outscored WCU 31-19 in the second and third quarters and just beat out WCU in the fourth 13-12.
  • UNCG drilled eight three-pointers in the game as the Catamounts could only find the basket behind the three-point line twice. 
  • Western Carolina made it interesting down the stretch in the fourth quarter going on a 6-0 run in the final four minutes of the contest. 
  • Seven of the eight Lady Catamounts who saw the court scored in the contest. 
  • Western Carolina outshot UNCG hitting 40 percent from the field to the Spartans' 36 percent. 
  • The Catamounts got 26 of their points inside the paint.
  • UNCG won the rebounding battle ripping down 38 to Western Carolina's 29. Twenty-one of the Spartans' rebounds were on the defensive end. 
  • The Catamounts' biggest lead in the game was six in the second quarter. UNCG ballooned it's lead all the way up to 16 points with 5:55 left before WCU battled back. 
 
 
News & Notes
  • LaPlant kept her three-point streak alive draining a three-pointer in the second quarter. She has hit at least one three-pointer in all 18 games on the season. 
  • LaPlant has scored in double figures in the last five games and 10 of the last 12 games. She is averaging 13 points in that 12-game span and has hit 36 three-pointers. 
  • LaPlant's 49 three-pointers in the game ranks 12th in the WCU record books for three-pointers in a season. She is two away from moving into 10th.The record is 67 set by former WCU player Amy Baker in the 1995-96 season.
  •  Moates has scored in double figures in the last two games and four of the last five contests. 
  • In the first three SoCon games of the season, LaPlant is averaging 13 points per game and Moates is just behind with 10.3. 
  • UNCG's win puts them in sole possession of first place after Furman's loss to Chattanooga earlier in the day. The victory at home for the Spartans on Saturday was the 10th home win of the season – the longest home win streak in program history. 
  • Western Carolina's 132 three-pointers for the season ranks 14th in the WCU record books. The Catamounts need three to move into 12th place.
