Three Catamounts Score in Double Figures in Loss to Samford

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball had three players score in double figures as the Catamounts battled the Samford Bulldogs before dropping the game 62-50 Thursday in the Ramsey Center. 
 
Turning Point:
With the scored tied at 47, Samford went on a 15-3 run in the final six minutes of the game, holding Western Carolina to one field goal in that span. 
 
Individual Leaders
  • Redshirt junior Tembre Moates and freshman Andrea Martin Ruiz led the Catamounts with 14 points each. Moates also had five rebounds. 
  • Sophomore Jewel Smalls recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. 
  • Redshirt junior Lauren LaPlant hit a pair of three-pointers. 
  • Samford's Shaunti Battle led three Bulldogs in double-figure scoring with a game-leading 20 points. 
 
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Samford led for the whole game starting with a pair of Bulldog free throws to start the contest. 
  • There were five ties in the game including three times in the second half. 
  • After a tight game in the first three quarters, Samford outscored Western Carolina 21-10 in the fourth quarter. 
  • Western Carolina had 16 turnovers in the game leading to 14 Samford points. 
  • The Catamounts won the rebounding battle 35-33 against the Bulldogs. 
  • Samford benefited from 24 trips to the free-throw line hitting 19. WCU was only awarded six free-throw chances hitting three. 
  • Western Carolina and Samford each hit five three-pointers. 
  • Samford had six blocks in the game. 
  • The Catamounts shot 40.4 percent from the field holding Samford to 36.5. 
 
 
News & Notes
  • LaPlant took over seventh place in WCU record book for three-pointers in a season with 57 on the year. She needs five to move into sixth place and 11 to break the record. 
  • LaPlant's pair of three-pointer against Samford keeps her streak alive having hit at least one three-pointer in all 21 games on the season. 
  • With five three-pointers in the game as a team, Western Carolina has 150 on the season moving into fifth place in the WCU record books. The Catamounts need two three-pointers in the next game to move up to fourth place. 
  • Smalls notched her ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds. It was also the 15th time on the year she as scored in double figures and the 10th time she has ripped down double-figure rebounds. 
  • Smalls now has 212 rebounds on the season. It is the most rebounds by a Catamount since Sherae Bonner ripped down 235 in the 2017-18 season. 
  • Andrea Martin Ruiz has scored in double figures in the last two games and the sixth time on the season. 
  • After a stretch of four games without scoring in double figures, Smalls has now scored in double figures in two of the last three games.
  • Smalls dipped below averaging a double-double for the season after Furman but rebounded into double-figure rebounds against Samford. She is now averaging 13.6 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.
