Catamounts Host Mercer Saturday

Closes out twp-game home stand

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball completes a two-game home stand hosting Mercer at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Ramsey Center.  
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina and Mercer meet for the 18th time on Saturday. The Bears have won all previous 17 meetings dating back to Dec. 2, 1995.  Six of the previous 17 meetings have been decided by five points or less. In the last meeting in Cullowhee on Jan. 17, 2019 the Bears escaped with a 69-67 win. Clawing back into the game after trailing 47-28 at the half, Western Carolina outscored Mercer in each of the final two periods for a total of 39-22 tying the game at 67 off a three-point shot by Jewel Smalls. Mercer escaped by going 2-of-4 from the free-throw line in the last 30 seconds of the game.
  • Lauren LaPlant took over seventh place in WCU record book for three-pointers in a season with 57 on the year. She needs five to move into sixth place and 11 to break the record. LaPlant's pair of three-pointer against Samford keeps her streak alive having hit at least one three-pointer in all 21 games on the season.
  • With five three-pointers against Samford as a team, Western Carolina has 150 on the season moving into fifth place in the WCU record books. The Catamounts need two three-pointers in the next game to move up to fourth place.
  • After dipping below a double-digit average in rebounds, sophomore Jewel Smalls bounced back into double-figure rebounds averaging a double-double for the season with 13.6 points and 10.1 rebounds per game after a double-double against Samford Thursday.
  • LaPlant is tied for 27 in the NCAA for most three-pointers in a season (57) while Smalls ranks 13th in the NCAA for most rebounds (212) and 27th for rebounds per game (10.1).
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT MERCER:
  • Sophomore Jaron Dougherty ranks eighth in the nation in made field goals with 152.
  • Dougherty leads the Bears averaging 16 points per game.
  • Ten of Mercer's 11 players are underclassmen.
  • Mercer dropped a hard-fought 67-51 game at UNCG on Thursday evening at Fleming Gymnasium.
