Catamounts Open 2020 Hosting Southern Wesleyan Monday

First of three games in six days

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball plays its final non-conference game of the season and the first contest of 2020 when the Catamounts host Southern Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Monday in the Ramsey Center.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina and Southern Wesleyan have met once before on Nov. 3, 2014, in an exhibition contest. The Catamounts defeated the Warriors 76-59. Justin Taylor led all scorers with 20 points, dished out nine assists and was 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Taylor was one of three Catamount players to score in double figures with junior Erika Joseph adding 19 and fellow junior Lindsay Simpson posting 16. The game on Monday will be an exhibition game for Southern Wesleyan.
  • Western Carolina will play three games in six days. WCU plays the final non-conference game against Southern Wesleyan before opening So-Con play hosting Chattanooga Thursday and hosting ETSU Saturday as part of a double-header with men's basketball.
  • Redshirt junior Tembre Moates scored a career-high 19 points against College of Charleston. She hit a career-best nine field goals in the contest tying her for ninth in the WCU record books for most field goals in a game.
  • Though the record doesn't reflect it, WCU has found some cohesiveness. Over the last four games, the Catamounts are averaging 62.0 points per game almost eight points more per game more than their overall average of 54.5.
  • Sophomore Jewel Smalls' 157 rebounds on the season, in 14 games, al-ready bests her seasonal total of 156 boards from her freshman campaign in 30 games. She is currently tied for seventh place in the NCAA with her 157 rebounds and ninth in the NCAA for rebounds per game with 11.2. She also leads the team averaging 15.9 points per game.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT SOUTHERN WESLEYAN:
  • Southern Wesleyan's game against Western Carolina will be an exhibition game for the Warriors.
  • The Warriors are on a four-game losing streak with a record of 1-12. Southern Wesleyan's lone win came on Dec. 18 with an 81-67 win over Lees-McRae.
