Catamounts Face Georgia State in GSU Holiday Classic

WCU Faces Georgia Southern Monday

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball opens play in the GSU Holiday Classic Sunday taking on host Georgia State at 1 p.m. in the GSU Sports Arena. The Catamounts will face former Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern at 1 p.m. Monday to close out the tournament.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina and Georgia State meet for the 14th time on Sunday. The Panthers hold a slight 8-5 edge over the Catamounts in the win/loss category. Western Carolina won the recent meeting on Nov. 23, 2013, defeating the Panthers 74-61 in Cullowhee. The WCU victory in 2013 halted a two-game winning streak by Georgia State. Overall, the Panthers have won four of the last five meetings. The Catamount's only win at Georgia State happened on Dec. 11, 2010, with a 51-37 win - the lowest scoring total Panthers against the Catamounts in the series.
  • Zanoria Cruz has hit her last 25-consecutive free throws - including a season-high 10 against Elon.
  • Redshirt junior Kyla Allison scored a season-high 17 points against Tennessee Tech on Dec. 16. Allison has scored in double figures in two of the last three games and four of the first six games overall. She leads the team averaging 12.2 points per game. Allison has scored 73 points this season, 20 points shy of her point total in her first year at Middle Tennessee in the 2016-17 season.
  • WCU is 32-of-37 from the free-throw line over the last five games. Overall, WCU is 50-of-67 from the charity stripe shooting 74.6 percent - ranking second in the Southern Conference. 
  • Western Carolina tied its season-high scoring 63 points at Tennessee Tech. It was the second time this season WCU has scored 60 or more points in a game. 
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE PANTHERS:
  • Georgia State had its three-game winning streak snapped after falling to Georgia 85-51 on Dec. 17.
  • Western Carolina is the second of three SoCon teams the Panthers will face this season. Georgia State defeated Furman 78-59 on Dec. 6 and is set to tangle with Chattanooga in the GSU Holiday Classic on Dec. 21.
  • Taylor Hosendove is the lone Panther averaging in double figures with 11.2 points per game. She also paces the team in rebounding at 7.6 per contest.
  • Georgia Southern is averaging 69.6 points per game.
