Catamounts Clash with Newberry on Thursday

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Western Carolina men's basketball team remains at home on Thursday night as the Catamounts welcome Newberry to the Ramsey Center for a 7 p.m. contest. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required) with audio available on the Catamount Sports Network.

The game against the NCAA Division II-member Wolves was added Tuesday to replace a rescheduled contest against Bowling Green.

WCU is 3-1 following a 96-58 win over Piedmont College on Monday afternoon in the 2020-21 home opener. Senior Matt Halvorsen surpassed the 1,000-career point mark with 20 points. Freshman Sin'Cere McMahon made his first collegiate start, matching Halvorsen with a career-best 20 points. Sophomore Xavier Cork posted his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. A total of 12 Catamounts contributed offensively in the victory. Halvorsen currently leads four Catamounts in double-figures this season with an average of 18.0 points per game, sixth-highest in the Southern Conference.

A member of the South Atlantic Conference, Newberry is 0-1 on the season after an 80-62 league loss at #2 Lincoln Memorial on Nov. 21. The Wolves are slated to play a league matchup at Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tenn., tonight (Wednesday) at 8 p.m.

Thursday's game is the 18th all-time meeting between the schools and first since a 92-78 Catamount win in Cullowhee on Dec. 10, 1998. WCU leads the all-time series 13-4 with all but two games being played when both institutions were NAIA members.

The Catamounts conclude a three-game home stretch on Sunday against Tennessee Tech. Tip-off is scheduled for Noon and will be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required) and audio available on the Catamount Sports Network.
