Allison Ties Career-High With 24 in Loss to Georgia State

Nadia Marshall rips down career-best 14 rebounds

The Basics
 Score: Georgia State 74, Western Carolina 61

ATLANTA, GA. – Redshirt junior Kyla Allison tied her career-high with a game-leading 24 points in Western Carolina women's basketball's 74-61 loss to Georgia State Sunday in the GSU Sports Arena. The contest was game one of two at the two-day GSU Holiday Classic tournament. 
 
Turning Point:
Georgia State built a 34-22 lead in the first half, thanks in part to 9-of-14 from the free-throw line, and the Catamounts hitting just nine field goals and going 0-for-5 from behind the three-point arch – shooting just 27.8 percent in the first quarter. 
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Allison led the Catamounts, and the game, with 24 points tying her season-high with nine field goals.
  • Freshman Zanoria Cruz was the second Catamount to score in double figures with 16.
  • Senior Lauren LaPlant sank three treys and was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line for 11 points.
  • Redshirt sophomore Nadia Marshall ripped down a team-best 14 rebounds in the contest. Thirteen of her 14 boards were on the defensive end. 
  • Taylor Hosendove paced the Panthers with 11 points. 
  Inside the Box Score
  • Georgia State shot a scorching 50 percent from the field and held Western Carolina to 37.5. After the Catamounts shot 27.8 percent from the field in the first quarter, WCU rebounded to 40 plus percent in the ensuing quarters.
  • The Panthers shot 58 percent from behind the three-point arch hitting 7-of-12. WCU did not make a three-pointer in the first two quarters and hit three in the final two – all three at the hands of LaPlant.
  • The Catamounts just edged Georgia State in rebounding ripping down 36 to the Panthers 31. Twenty-five of WCU's rebounds were defensive. 
  • WCU committed 17 turnovers in the contest which equated to 18 Panther points. On the flip side, WCU got 21 points from 18 GSU turnovers. 
  • Georgia State got help from the bench scoring 30 points from players off the bench. 
  • After struggling the first half, Western Carolina found some momentum in the second half being outscored by just one by Georgia State 40-39 in the final 20 minutes. Each team scored 21 in the fourth quarter. 
 News & Notes
  • Allison becomes the second Catamount this season to score 20 or more points in a game. Earlier in the season, Cruz scored a career-high 24. She also scored 24 points as a freshman at Middle Tennessee before transferring to Western Carolina. 
  • Allison has scored in double figures in five of the first seven games on the year scoring in double figures in back-to-back games twice. In the last two games, Allison is averaging 20.5 points per game.
  • Zanoria Cruz had her consecutive free throws streak snapped at 25 hitting 1-of-2 free throws in the second quarter against Georgia State. After hitting 8-of-9 from the charity stripe against the Panthers, Cruz is now 29-of-30 from the free-throw line on the year. 
  • Lauren LaPlant keeps her streak alive – hitting at least one three-pointer in the last 37 consecutive games.
  • The Catamounts also extended its three-point streak as a team – WCU has hit at least one three-pointer in 339 straight games dating back to 2009. 
  • Marshall's 14 rebounds are a career-high and most by a Catamount this season. She is the second Catamount this season to record double-figure rebounds in a game. Tembre Moates pulled down 12 rebounds earlier in the year.  
  • The 61 points scored by the Catamounts against Georgia State was the second consecutive game WCU has scored 60 or more points in a game and the third of the year. 
  • The 11 points scored by LaPlant is the second time this year she has scored in double figures. 
 
 Up Next
Western Carolina will take on Georgia Southern Monday in day two action at the GSU Holiday Classic hosted by Georgia State. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. The game can be heard courtesy of the Eagles radio network.
