Catamounts pick up first win of the season

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball head coach Kiley Hill earned his 300th career victory as the Catamounts defeated Newberry 63-44 Wednesday, in the Ramsey Center, in the team's first victory on the young season. 


 
Turning Point:
Western Carolina opened the game on an 8-0 run and held Newberry to single-digit scoring until 1:21 left in the first quarter. The Catamount's 25-point output in the second quarter secured a 20-point lead at the half, 41-21, and was the pathway to WCU's victory. 
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Redshirt junior Kyla Allison led the Catamounts with 15 points, hitting three treys and pulling down five rebounds. 
  • Redshirt senior Tembre Moates scored in double figures for the second time this season with 10 points. 
  • Redshirt senior Lauren LaPlant ripped down a career-high six rebounds.
  • Sophomore Andrea Martin Ruiz dished out five assists. 
  • Newberry's Courtney Virgo paced the Wolves with 15 points hitting five three-pointers in the contest. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • Western Carolina shot a scorching 45.6 percent from the field holding Newberry to 38.6 percent.
  • The Catamounts ripped down 35 rebounds – 23 on the defensive end. 
  • WCU found success inside scoring 30 points inside the paint. 
  • The Catamounts were a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. 
  • All nine players who dressed out for Western Carolina saw action on the court for the Catamounts against Newberry. Eight of the nine players got into the scoring column. WCU got 14 bench points in the game. 
  • WCU held Newberry under 14 points in all four quarters. 
  • Newberry hit eight three-pointers in the game – five from Virgo. WCU had five. 
 
  News & Notes
  • LaPlant's pair of three-pointers in the game kept her streak alive – she has hit at least one three-pointer in 34 consecutive games dating back to 2019-20.
  • The Catamounts also extended its three-point streak as a team – WCU has hit at least one three-pointer in 336 straight games dating back to 2009. 
  • With 15 points against Newberry, Allison has scored in double figures in three of the first four games of the season. 
  • Freshman Joi Reid ripped down a career-high six rebounds. 
  • The 66 points scored by Western Carolina against Newberry is a season-high. 
  • LaPlant's pair of three-pointer in the game pushes her career total to 137 maintaining her spot of sixth place in the WCU record books. She needs nine three-pointers to move into fifth place.
