Men’s Basketball Battles UNCG on Wednesday

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina men's basketball opens a two-game roadtrip on Wednesday as the Catamounts visit in-state rival UNCG for a 7 p.m. contest at the Greensboro Coliseum.

The game will be streamed on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) with audio coverage on the Catamount Sports Network. Live stats are also available at www.catamountsports.com.

Western Carolina is 15-8 overall and 7-5 in the Southern Conference following an 82-73 setback against Furman on Saturday afternoon. Onno Steger finished with a team-best 24 points after he went 8-for-15 from the field and 7-for-12 behind the 3-point line. Steger finished one made 3-pointer shy of tying a career-high while attempting a career-best 12 3-pointers. Mason Faulkner tallied 22 points for his 10th game this season over the 20-point plateau. Carlos Dotson grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds but saw his consecutive double-double streak end at six, finishing one point shy with a nine-point output.

UNCG is 19-6 and 9-3 after cruising past Samford 95-67 on Sunday afternoon in Greensboro. The Spartans opened the game on a 12-3 run and never looked back as five players finished in double figures led by Kyrin Galloway with 19 points. UNCG currently sits in third place in the SoCon standings.

Wednesday's game will be a clash of the SoCon's best scoring offense in Western Carolina at 78.9 points per game against its top defense in UNCG which surrenders 60.9 ppg. The Catamounts have the No. 23 scoring offense among NCAA Division I programs while UNCG's scoring defense checks in at No. 11.

WCU leads the all-time series 31-24 but has lost eight straight matchups following a 72-58 defeat on Jan. 29 in Cullowhee. In that game WCU led by one point at halftime and held an 11-point advantage six minutes into the second half before the Spartans closed the game on an 18-3 run.

The Catamounts venture to Spartanburg, S.C. on Saturday, facing Wofford at 7 p.m.
