CLEMSON, S.C. – Freshman hurler Savannah Rice pitched a gem, tossing a complete-game shutout, as Western Carolina softball played spoiler to Clemson's inaugural home game defeating the Tigers 2-0 in game one of a doubleheader Wednesday. The Tigers avenged the opening game loss defeating the Catamounts 8-0 in game two in five innings.

Turning Point 
After four scoreless innings, Western Carolina scored a run in the fifth and one in the seventh. Addie Pate's RBI single in the fifth plated the first run of the game and sophomore Bailey Huneycutt's lead-off home run to open the seventh all but sealed the game. 
 
How it Happened 
  • In the fifth inning, senior Ashlyn Long broke up Clemson pitcher Valerie Cagle's no-hit attempt with a single up the middle. Long went around to score off an RBI single by Pate.
  • In the seventh inning, Western Carolina scored the second run of the game when Huneycutt launched a lead-off home run to right field. 
  • The Catamount defense battled through seven Clemson hits and four extra-base knocks.
  • Clemson had the game-tying run at the plate when Pate made a sliding catch in left field to end the Tiger threat and the game. 
 
Inside the Box Score 
  • In her first game in a Catamount uniform, Rice threw seven innings giving up seven hits, struck out four and shut out the Tigers. She is 1-0 on the season. 
  • Huneycutt, Long, Hayes, and Pate each had a hit in the game.
  • Huneycutt hit the only extra-base hit of the game for the Catamounts – a homerun.
  • Clemson stranded eight runners.

Turning Point 
Clemson scored two runs in the bottom of the first and exploded for four runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
 
How it Happened 
  • Clemson jumped out on top first hitting a two-run home run in the top of the first.
  • The Tigers exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth. 
  • Clemson ended the game early scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth to give the Tigers eight runs and shorten the game.
 
Inside the Box Score 
  • The Catamounts had four pitchers see action in the game. 
  • Senior Kinsey Liscio got the start going two innings giving up two runs on four hits. Liscio takes the loss and falls to 0-1 on the season.
  • Junior Kayla Brewer went one inning giving up two hits and one earned run. 
  • Jayme Eilers came in to replace Brewer in the fourth giving up three runs on three hits without getting an out.
  • Senior pitcher Kylie Shay replaced Eilers with runners on first and second with no outs in the fourth. She sat the Tigers down in-order to end the inning. Shay allowed two runs in the fifth.
  • Clemson pitcher Logan Caymol tossed a no-hitter but was denied a perfect game with walks to Long and Huneycutt.
  • Western Carolina did not have a hit in the game.
  • WCU had two baserunners – Long and Huneycutt.
 
 
News & Notes 
  • Western Carolina is 4-11 in games to open a season after the win against Clemson. 
  • Pate was playing in her hometown as she lives about 15 minutes from the Clemson campus. 
  • Four different pitchers saw action in game two. 
  • Rice's performance is the best in program history for a freshman. She is the first Catamount freshman to toss a shutout in her first game and is the second freshman to earn a win in her first start tying with former Catamount Mendy McKenzie who earned a win in her first WCU appearance in 2006. 
  • Rice struck out the first batter she faced.
 
 
Up Next 
Western Carolina will take a 13-day break before hosting its home opener Feb. 25 welcoming Winthrop for a pair of games set to begin at noon at the Catamount Softball Complex.
