Catamounts Host UNCG and Pink Game

Begins a three-game home stand

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina begins a three-game home stand Saturday when the Catamounts welcome UNCG into the Ramsey Center at 2 p.m. Saturday. It will also be the team's pink game honoring cancer survivors and raising money for cancer research.     
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina and UNCG meet for the 75th time on Saturday. The Spartans took the earlier meeting this year in Greensboro defeating the Catamounts 54-43. Overall, the Catamounts hold a 40-34 advanatge but have lost the last five meetings. WCU's last victory over the Spartans came in Cullowhee on Feb. 25, 2017 with a 77-74 win. Over the last 10 games, WCU is 4-6 against UNCG.
  • Western Carolina has started the month of February on the right foot on the basketball court with a 2-1 record to open the month with a first-ever win over Mercer and the Catamounts first road victory of the season at Chattanooga.
  • The Catamounts halted a 21-game losing streak to Chattanooga with the 61-42 victory over the Mocs in Chattanooga. It was also the first win at Chattanooga since 2009 when current Tennessee Lady Vol Head Coach Kellie Harper was at the helm of the Catamount program.
  • Redshirt junior Lauren LaPlant has connected on a season-high 64 three-pointers ranking tied for fourth in the WCU record books. She needs four three-pointers to break the program record.
  • LaPlant has connected on a season-high 59 three-pointers becoming just the eighth player in program history to hit 57 or more three-pointers in a season. She ranks 7th place in the record book and is three away from sixth place. 
  • Sophomore Jewel Smalls has 239 rebounds on the season ranking 20th in the WCU record books for rebounds in a season. It is the most rebounds by a Catamount since former player Sherae Bonner had 247 in the 2016-17 season.  Her 39 rebounds also rank 25th in the NCAA and leads the SoCon.
  • The Catamounts seven three-pointers against Chattanooga, on Feb. 8 gives WCU 167 three-pointers on the season as the team tying for third in the record books. Western Carolina needs one to take over third place and seven for second place.
  • Western Carolina Head Coach Kiley Hill has 299 wins as a head coach. He is looking to reach the 300 mark in his first season at Western Carolina. 
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT UNCG:
  • Nadine Soliman leads all SoCon players with 16.9 points per game (84th in Division I); The senior guard is 35 points away from hitting the 2,000-career mark (1,965).
  • The Spartans currently rank 13th in the nation (54.8 ppg) in scoring defense.
  • Te'Ja Twitty notched her 25th career double-double against ETSU to break the program record for most double-doubles in a career.
  • UNCG currently ranks tied for second with Samford in the SoCon standings with a 6-3 record.
