SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior
Carlos Dotson scored a game-high 25 points as Western Carolina completed the season sweep of Wofford with an 80-74 victory on Saturday at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
With the win, Western Carolina (16-9, 8-6 SoCon) sweeps the season series with Wofford for the first time since the 2006-07 season. With both teams at 8-6 on the year, WCU moves into a tie with the Terriers for fourth in the SoCon standings with the tie-breaker in hand thanks to the seasonal sweep with four regular-season games remaining.
Dotson, who attended Dorman High School in Spartanburg, grabbed 12 rebounds for his 15
th double-double of the season. He also added two steals with two blocks and four assists.
Mason Faulkner added 23 points and a game-high six assists.
Onno Steger finished in double figures with 12 points while
Travion McCray scored 10 points off the bench.
Nathan Hoover led Wofford (16-11, 8-6) with 19 points. Storm Murphy added 12 points while Trevor Stumpe tallied 11 points with a team-best six rebounds.
The teams combined for three turnovers on the first four possessions of the game before Goodwin started a 10-0 Terrier run with a jumper at the 18:40 mark. Faulkner got the Catamounts on the board with a 3-pointer with just over 16 minutes remaining as WCU answered with a 9-0 spurt capped by a Dotson layup with 13:34 to play. Hoover's jumper at the 10:48 mark put the hosts on top 17-13, but the Catamounts used 3-pointers by
Travion McCray and Steger to knot the game at 19 prior to taking their first lead of the game, 22-21, on a Halvorsen 3-pointer with just under eight minutes left before the break. Neither team was able to gain separation over the next three minutes as the game featured four lead changes and one tie. In the final five minutes of the half, Wofford twice pushed its lead to four points, but the Catamounts led 39-38 at halftime as Faulkner sank a 3-pointer just before time expired.
Out of the halftime locker room, Larson put Wofford back on top before the Catamounts went on an 8-0 run for a 47-40 advantage with 16:33 to play. Hoover's three-point play brought Wofford back within two, 53-51, with just under 14 minutes left. The Terriers went ahead 57-56 with a Bigelow 3-pointer at the 12:37 mark before the Catamounts went on a 10-2 run for a 66-59 lead after a Dotson jumper with just over nine minutes to play.
Murphy brought Wofford back within two, 66-64, at the 8:17 mark before WCU went on an 8-2 run for a 74-66 advantage with just over 1:50 to play. The Terriers pulled within four points on two occasions down the stretch but would get no closer as Faulkner secured the win with a pair of free throws with 12 seconds on the clock for the game's final score.
The Catamounts outrebounded Wofford 32-21 with a 28-14 edge on the defensive glass. WCU went 29-for-52 (55.8 percent) from the field, 10-for-20 (50 percent) behind the arc and 12-for-13 (92.3 percent) at the free throw line. Wofford finished the game 29-for-64 (45.3 percent) from the field, 9-for-33 (27.3 percent) in 3-point attempts and 7-for-11 (63.6 percent) at the charity stripe.
WCU opens a three-game homestand Wednesday against VMI. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
