CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina senior forward
Onno Steger was today named to the 2019-20 Academic All-District 3 men's basketball first team selected and released by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Steger is the first Catamount to be named to the Academic All-District team since Jake Robinson claimed a spot on the 2009-10 Academic All-District 3 team. Robinson is one of four players in program history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors.
The 2019-20 Academic All-District Men's Basketball Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. Steger advances to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot with Academic All-America® selections announced next month.
Steger completed his undergraduate requirements in December, graduating as a double major in Finance as well as Innovation Leadership and Entrepreneurship with a 3.56 GPA. He is currently enrolled in WCU's Business Administration graduate program.
On the court, the Upper Arlington, Ohio native has started each of WCU's 26 games this season and is averaging 12.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Against The Citadel on Jan. 4, Steger made a career-high eight 3-pointers as he scored a game-high 28 points in an 86-82 victory. He leads the SoCon in 3-point field goal percentage at 43.0 percent and is ninth in 3-point field goals made per game at 2.5.
Steger is one of three Southern Conference players to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, joining Mercer's Djordje Dimitrijevic and Wofford's Storm Murphy who both took spots on the Academic All-District 4 team.
WCU plays the second of three straight home games on Saturday against The Citadel at 7:30 in the second half of a hoops doubleheader with the women's team.
