CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball came up short Saturday on Senior Day falling to Wofford 65-58 in the Ramsey Center in the Catamounts final home game of the season.
Turning Point:
Western Carolina led Wofford 53-52 with 8:20 remaining, however, the Catamounts were scoreless over the next five-plus minutes. WCU hit just one field goal in the final eight minutes of the contest and was 1-of-13 in that span.
Individual Leaders
- Redshirt junior Lauren LaPlant led the Catamounts with 15 points hitting a pair of three-pointers and was 3-of-3 from the free-throw line.
- Jewel Smalls poured in 11 points draining three three-pointers and ripping down seven rebounds.
- Rookie Andrea Martin Ruiz added 10 points with three assists.
- Wofford's Nyah Lutz led the Terriers with 19 points and added seven rebounds.
- Terrier Lawren Cook ripped down 11 rebounds.
Inside the Box Score
- The Terriers were tenaciously crashing the boards for 45 rebounds – 26 on the defensive end. The Catamounts were held to 23 rebounds only four on the offensive side.
- Western Carolina outshot Wofford hitting 43.1 percent from the field while the Terriers were just under 40 percent at 39.1.
- Wofford was sent to the line 25 times in contrast to Western Carolina's eight trips. The Terriers were 14-of-25 from the charity stripe.
- The Catamounts had a season-low eight turnovers in the game while Wofford had just two.
- Each team connected on seven three-pointers.
- Both teams enjoyed points inside the paint as each had 24 points.
- The tale of the game was in the fourth quarter as Wofford outscored Western Carolina 16-9.
News & Notes
- LaPlant added to her career record for most three-pointers in a season with a pair against Furman. She now has 73 on the season.
- With two three-pointers against Wofford, LaPlant has 124 and needs two to move into sixth place.
- As a team, the Catamounts have hit 187 three-pointers on the season. The 2019-20 squad needs three three-pointers before the end of the season to take over first place held by the 2013-14 team who ended the season with 189.
- LaPlant has scored in double figures in six consecutive games and 17 of the last 19 contests.
- Sophomore Jewel Smalls has scored 331 points besting her mark from her freshman campaign of 330. She has a total of 661 points on the season.
- Smalls has 260 rebounds on the season moving her into a tie for seventh place for most rebounds on the year. She needs two rebounds to move into sixth place. Her 260 rebounds are the most by a Catamount women's basketball player since former player Chevon Keith had 282 in the 2006-07 season. That mark earned Keith SoCon Defensive Player of the Year honors.
