Softball Heads to Bulldog Classic Hosted by No. 14 Georgia

First Tournament of the Season for Catamounts

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball heads out on the road this weekend, Feb. 28 – March 1, to compete in the Bulldog Classic hosted by No. 14 Georgia. The Catamounts will face Eastern Illinois and host Georgia twice and have one match-up with Boston College. 
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • In the opening game of the tournament for WCU, the Catamounts will face Eastern Illinois. Western Carolina is 0-2 against Eastern Illinois facing the team twice at a tournament hosted by Gardner-Webb in 2018. The Panthers defeated WCU 5-3, 3-1. Western Carolina and Boston College have met just once before in 2008 at a tournament held in Fort Myers, Fla. The Eagles defeated the Catamounts 6-3. Western Carolina and host Georgia have met eight times with the Bulldogs winning all eight meetings. The closest game between the two teams occurred in 2016 when UGA defeated WCU 5-2.
  • Western Carolina split the doubleheader with Winthrop on Feb. 25 in the Catamounts home opener. WCU came from behind to defeat the Eagles 4-3 in the first game and lost the second game 9-6. 
  • Freshman hurler Jayme Eilers became the second Catamount freshman pitcher this season to win her first career start. Fellow freshman Savannah Rice won her first start at Clemson Feb. 12 shutting out the Tigers 2-0. 
  • In the first four games of the season, sophomore Bailey Huneycutt is hitting .400 with hits, three runs scored, two homeruns and four RBI. Huneycutt was a 2019 Southern Conference All-Freshman team selection.

  • While other teams around the country have played double-digit games in the first three-plus week's fo the season, Western Carolina has only played four games so far. 
  •  In the first two doubleheaders, Western Carolina has played on the season, the Catamounts have won the front end of the pair of games and dropped the second game. 
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT OPPONENTS:
  • Host Georgia is ranked 14th in the country. The Bulldogs are 15-4 with losses to No. 17/19 Texas Tech, No. 3/2 UCLA South Florida and Clemson – a team Western Carolina beat 2-0 earlier in February. 
  • Eastern Illinois comes into the Bulldog Classic with a record of 7-5. The Panthers split with Catamount SoCon foe Samford at a tournament hosted by the Bulldogs dropping the first meeting 4-3 and bounced back to win the second game 16-11 in a slugfest. 
  • Boston College is the lone team entering the tournament with a losing record at 5-8. The Eagles have won three of their last five games and had their two-game winning streak snapped with a 5-4 loss to Iowa State at a tournament hosted by South Carolina.
