Catamounts Lose Battle at Samford

Will be No. 8 seed in upcoming SoCon Championship

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – Western Carolina women's basketball had three players score in double figures falling in a dog and cat fight to the Samford Bulldogs 70-53 Saturday in the Pete Hanna Center in the final regular-season game of the season. 
 
Up Next
Western Carolina will be the No. 8 seed heading into the 2020 Southern Conference Championship. The Catamounts will face the No. 1 seed Samford, at 11 a.m. Thursday, Mar. 5 at the Harrah's Cherokee Center Asheville in Asheville, N.C. It will be the second meeting between the two teams in six days. 
 
Turning Point:
It was a game of runs and in the end, Samford got the upper hand with the last run of the game. With western Carolina leading by one, 40-39, the Bulldogs went on a 10-0 run to retake the lead and never relinquish it. The Bulldogs also benefitted from outscoring Western Carolina 16-4 in the fourth quarter.

  • Western Carolina suffered through 19 turnovers during crucial times in the contest. Those Catamount turnovers turned into 26 points for the Bulldogs. 
  • The two teams hit a combined 19 three-pointers in the game with the Bulldogs connecting on 10 and the Catamounts hitting nine.
  • Western Carolina had a better shooting percentage than the Bulldogs shooting 47 percent to Samford's 41 percent. 
  • Samford ripped down 32 rebounds while Western Carolina had 25. 
  • The game was tied four times and the lead changed five different occasions. Western Carolina had the lead a total of three minutes. 
  • The Bulldogs benefited from being awarded trips to the charity stripe going 16-of-17.

  • With 1-of-2 free throws in the game, LaPlant secured her eighth straight double-figure scoring performance. She has scored in double figures in 14 of the last 15 games. 
  • Smalls' 11 points mark the 18th time this season she has scored in double figures.
  • Andrea Martin Ruiz has scored in double figures in the last three games. 
  • Smalls has 280 rebounds sitting in fifth place in the WCU record books for most rebounds in a season. She needs three rebounds to take over fourth place. 
  • Western Carolina extends its seasonal record lead for three-pointers in a season with 205. 
  • This will be the fourth-straight year Western Carolina will be the No. 8 seed in the SoCon Tournament.
