The Basics

Records: Western Carolina 3-13, Radford 13-3
Location: Catamount Softball Complex, Cullowhee, N.C.

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina came up short in both games against Radford Wednesday falling by one run, 7-6, 4-3, at the Catamount Softball Complex.

Radford 7, Western Carolina 6

Turning Point
Radford scored four runs over the first two innings, three in the first and one in the second and weathered a Western Carolina comeback attempt which included a game-clinching run at the top of the seventh.

How it Happened
  • Radford pushed across three runs in the top of the first inning, scoring two runs from a Western Carolina error. The Highlanders added a fourth run in the second and another run in the fourth to lead the Catamounts 5-0.
  • The Catamounts started to chip away at the Radford lead beginning in the fourth inning when senior Erica Hayes hit a one-out home run.
  • At the top of the fifth Radford tacked on its sixth run of the game.
  • Two more runs for Western Carolina unfolded in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Kylie Shay got it started with a one-out single up the middle. Bailey Huneycutt reached on a Highlander error moving pinch-runner, for Shay, Alexis Lankford to second. Kailey McNeil followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Lankford. An RBI groundout by Hayes scored Huneycutt for the Catamounts second run of the inning.
  • After holding Radford scoreless in the top of the sixth, Western Carolina cut the Highlander lead to two, 6-4 in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs Myra Twitty singled up the middle and was lifted for pinch-runner Danielle Chapman. Ashlyn Long followed with a single advancing to second on a throw that was an error leading to Chapman scoring.
  • Radford scored what would be the game-deciding run in the top of the seventh that began with a lead-off walk and ended with an RBI single.
  • Western Carolina had its rally caps on in the bottom of the seventh even though it fell short. Huneycutt started it off with a double to left-center. McNeil followed with a single and moved to second on a throw by the Highlanders that moved Huneycutt to second. Hayes hit a ball high and into foul territory near the Radford dugout allowing Huneycutt to tag and score. Pinch hitter Anna Paige Pelfrey knocked an RBI single through the left side plating McNeil and cutting the Radford lead to one, 7-6. Addie Pate followed with a single to put runners on first and second. A perfect sacrifice bunt by Lindsay Perillo moved the runner to second and third with one out. A ground out ended the rally and the game.

Inside the Box Score
  • Freshman Savannah Rice started the game tossing 3.2 innings giving up five runs, three earned, on six hits and struck out two. She falls to 2-5 on the season.
  • With one two outs in the fourth, Rice was lifted for senior Kinsey Liscio. She went 2.1 innings giving up two runs on one hit and struck out two.
  • Kayla Brewer replaced Liscio with no outs in the seventh and one Highlander run in. She faced four batters allowing one hit and one walk and didn't allow a run.
  • Western Carolina out-hit Radford 14 to eight. The 14 hits were a season-high for WCU.
  • Long, Shay, McNeil, Pate and Twitty each had a pair of hits.
  • Hayes had a home run and three RBI.

Radford 4, Western Carolina 3

Turning Point
Radford scored three unanswered runs over the final two innings to come from behind to win. All three runs were scored via home runs.

How it Happened
  • Huneycutt's solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the first inning gave Western Carolina the 1-0 lead.
  • Hayes' lead-off home run to open the second inning equated to a 2-0 lead by the Catamounts.
  • Radford cut the Catamount lead in half with an RBI single in the third inning to make the score 2-1.
  • The Catamounts got the run back in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI single by Long and WCU lead 3-1.
  • An unlucky break by Western Carolina and left fielder Pate turned into a tie ball game in the sixth inning. With two outs and a runner on Destiny Freeman launched a shot to left field and it appeared Pate stole the home run at the wall but the ball popped over and it turned into a two-run home run and a tie for the Highlanders.
  • Radford's second home run of the game to lead off the seventh proved to be the game-winner as Western Carolina was sat down to close out the inning.
