CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina men's basketball head coach
Mark Prosser today officially announced the signing of Ty McGhie (pronounced Mick-Guy) for the 2020-21 season. McGhie joins early signees in 6-6 guard Josh Massey (Monroe, N.C.) and 6-6 forward Daniel Ransom (Charlotte, N.C.) for the upcoming season.
"We are so excited to add Ty and his family into our program," said Prosser. "Ty is a great kid, a very good student, and has the chance to become a very good player in the Southern Conference. His size and position versatility, along with his elite ability to shoot the basketball, make him a very natural fit into our system here at Western Carolina. He has competed at an extremely high level of high school basketball in Texas as well as the highest possible level of AAU. He has produced at every stop along the way. We're very happy to have him on our side."
McGhie, a 6-4 guard, played scholastically at Guyer High School in Denton, Texas, where he was a 1,000-point scorer during his three-year varsity career. As a senior, McGhie averaged 19 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as he was named the 5-6A Co-MVP along with Guyer teammate and Butler University signee JaKobe Coles. McGhie also earned
Denton Record-Chronicle Co-Offensive MVP honors. Guyer went undefeated in district play and posted a 28-5 overall record. A strong shooter, McGhie shot 40 percent from behind the 3-point line and 88 percent at the free-throw line.
During his junior campaign, McGhie averaged 11.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, a large jump from his average of 4.0 points and 1.5 rebounds as a sophomore.
McGhie played AAU basketball for Team FOE and head coach Angel Mendez.
