Jim Clift Announces 2021 Softball Schedule

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina head softball coach Jim Clift today announced the 2021 Catamount softball schedule. A highlight of the season is a visit to Cullowhee by the Tennessee Lady Vols April 27 for a doubleheader. 

WCU will have 11 home dates and play in four tournaments on the year. 
 
The Catamounts open the season in the first of its four tournaments traveling to Montgomery, Ala., Feb. 12-14, competing in Stinger Classic hosted by Alabama State. WCU will take on host Alabama State, Tennessee Tech and North Alabama.
 
The following weekend, Feb. 19-21, Western Carolina will take part in the Troy Invitational againt host Troy and Austin Peay.
 
In the third tournament on the year, Feb. 27-28, the Catamounts travel to Charlotte for the for the Green and White Classic. WCU opens the tournament with a doubleheader with the 49ers and closes it out with contests against Longwood and South Carolina.
 
In between the tournaments, Western Carolina travels to Presbyterian March 3 and Radford March 5 for a pair of doubleheaders.
 
The Catamounts close out the tournament portion of their season in the Mercer Bears Classic hosted by SoCon foe Mercer on March 13-14. Western Carolina will take on Southern Miss, Presbyterian and Winthrop.
 
"We play four tournaments starting at Alabama State, Troy, Charlotte and finishing tournament play at Mercer," Clift said. "Power-5 opponents will include South Carolina, who we play in the Charlotte tournament"
 
After over five weeks on the road, Western Carolina plays its home opener March 23 welcoming former SoCon foe Appalachian State to Cullowhee. Other nonconference home games include contests with Radford (March 20),  Tennessee (April 27) and North Carolina A&T (April 30). SoCon home contests include games with Samford (April 2-3), ETSU (April 10-11), and Furman (May 1-2).
 
"The double-header at home against Tennessee will be the first SEC opponent to visit Cullowhee in softball," Clift shard.
 
A trip to USC Upstate closes out the non-conference portion of the season on April 20. Road conference games include: Chattanooga (Mar. 27-28), Mercer (April 17-18) and UNCG (May 8-9). 
 
"This will be quite a season to look forward to," Clift said. "Our players have worked hard and gone through a lot to get to this point. We are going to enjoy this. We have earned it."
 
For the 2021 season, the Southern Conference Tournament will only take the top four-seeds. The tournament will be held May 12-15 at the highest seed's home field.
