Soccer Travels to ETSU Friday

Wraps up three-match road swing

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer completes its three-match road swing at ETSU Friday in the Catamounts' lone contest of the week. The match is set to kick-off at 7 p.m.
 
FRIDAY – LIVE STATS
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Valentine Pursey was named Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals, two game-winners, and a golden goal, in the Catamounts' sweep at Furman and Wofford last weekend. 
  • Pursey leads the Catamounts having scored six goals on the year the most by a WCU player since former Catamount Megan McCallister's 10 goals in 2017. Pursey also leads the team in total points with 14. She also tops the SoCon in game-winning goals with five.
  • Rookie Naya Marcil ranks second on the team in goals scored with three and is tied with fellow freshman Kirsten Hahn for points with seven which ranks second. 
  • Western Carolina is riding a three-match winning streak and has won its last five road contests. The Catamounts have scored 10 of its 17 goals on the season on the road.
  • The Catamounts have also won six of its last seven matches outscoring opponents 10-5. 
  • Goalkeeper Melody Mezzina leads the SoCon with a 0.56 goals-against average and shutouts with five. She has only allowed five goals in 802:35 minutes played and has a record of 6-2-1. 
  • Western Carolina and ETSU meet for the 19th time on Friday. The Catamounts hold a slight 9-7-2 edge over the Buccaneers. WCU has won the last two meetings with ETSU one at home and one away defeating the Bucs' 3-0 in the spring of 2021 and knocking off ETSU 2-1 in double overtime in 2019. 
  • Overall WCU has won three of the last five meetings with ETSU including three of the last four. The Catamounts are 5-4-1 overall against the Buccaneers in Johnson City, Tenn. 
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT ETSU:
  • ETSU is coming off a 3-1 loss to Furman last Sunday. The Buccaneers split the weekend tilt dropping a 1-0 decision to Wofford on Friday. 
  • The Buccaneers have played to a tie in three of its last six matches with two of the three endings knotted 0-0. 
  • ETSU has lost to two SoCon teams Western Carolina picked up wins over The Citadel and Furman. 
  • The Buccaneers have scored seven goals on the season and have only one player with multiple goals scored – Kyra Ravnek with two.
