CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina men's basketball head coach Justin Gray today announced the DeJuan "DJ' Campbell and Marcus Kell during the early signing period. Both Campbell and Kell will join the Catamounts for the 2022-23 season.
 
Campbell is a 6'2 guard from Hampton Va. and attends Kecoughtan High School. During his junior season, Campbell averaged 20.8 points, six rebounds, and four assists per game under head coach Willie Gause. During each of his first three varsity seasons, Campbell earned a spot on the All-Peninsula District team and earned All-Region and VHSL All-State honors along with being named a Daily Press All-Star. Campbell plays AAU basketball for Boo Williams 17s. 
 
"We are excited to have DJ join Catamount Country," said Gray. "The first thing that stood out to our staff is how hard he competes! That fits perfectly with what we are building here in Cullowhee. Not only is he super competitive but he truly excels in the classroom as well.  DJ is an excellent Student-Athlete that we are adding to our family."
 
Kell is a 6'8" forward from Fort Mill, S.C. As a junior, he averaged 14.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game at Legion Collegiate Academy under head coach Otis Wilson. The Lancers reached the quarterfinals of the 2021 SCHSL Class AA state tournament as Kell earned All-Region and Rock Hill Herald Second Team All-Area honors. Kell also plays for Upward Stars SE AAU team coached by Curt Wheeler.

"Get used to the name Marcus Kell!" exclaimed Gray. "Marcus is so versatile, and we truly value his ability to stretch the floor and make plays off the bounce. Marcus is tirelessly working on his game and will definitely continue to get stronger and improve his overall game. Not to mention he is an honors student that is ultra-competitive! I can't wait to get Marcus on campus."
