Catamounts Host USC Upstate Wednesday in Second Game of Doubleheader

Catamounts playing second game in three days

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball plays its second game in three days hosting USC Upstate at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday on Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center. It is the second game of a doubleheader as men's basketball hosts Warren Wilson at 5 p.m.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina and USC Upstate meet for the 15th time on Wednesday with the Catamounts holding a slight 8-6 advantage. The Spartans have won three of the last five meetings including defeating WCU 70-62 on Nov. 12, 2019. The Catamounts are 4-3 at home against the Spartans with its last home victory coming on Dec. 4, 2018, with WCU taking a 68-64 overtime victory. The two teams first met on Feb. 7, 1980, with WCU winning 79-75.
  • The Catamounts are 4-1 at home to start the season.
  • The Catamounts have four wins after seven games to start the 2021-22 season. The four wins are two away from tying the win total of the 2020-21 campaign.
  • Western Carolina has scored 70 or more points in four of the seven games of the year with a record of 3-1.
  • Western Carolina is playing its second of four games in eight days.
  • The Catamounts currently rank 27th in the NCAA in rebound margin with a tally of 10.9 and 58th in total rebounds with 274.
 
AN INSIDE LOOK AT USC UPSTATE:
  • Western Carolina and USC Upstate each played Mars Hill as their last opponent each picking up victories over the Lions. The game with Mars Hill is one of seven common opponents as each team faced or will also face: UNC Asheville, South Carolina State, UNCG, Presbyterian, Winthrop, and Campbell.
  • The Spartans' 62-point victory, 102, 40 over Mars Hill, was the largest during Head Coach Becky Burke's tenure as head coach (2020-pres.) and the largest for the program since defeating Mars Hill 89-31 on November 16, 2019. 
  • Chellia Watson scored 30 points in the win over Mars Hill.
  • The Spartans have four players averaging in double figures: Watson (13.8), Molly Coleman (13.3), Rachel Rose (11.0) and Tera Harness (10.2).
