Catamounts Prevail in Overtime Over Tennessee Tech

CULLOWHEE, N.C.Nicholas Robinson and Vonterius Woolbright both recorded double-doubles as Western Carolina earned a 74-69 overtime victory over Tennessee Tech on Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center on Wednesday night.

WCU improves to 6-4 on the season while Tennessee Tech drops to 2-7.

Wednesday's game is the second straight matchup between the teams to head to overtime in as many years as WCU emerged with a 76-75 victory in Cullowhee last year. It is also the second overtime win of the season for the Catamounts, who won the season-opener 79-71 over Bowling Green on Nov. 9.

Robinson led the Catamounts with a game-high 19 points and pulled down 19 rebounds. He finished 5-for-17 from the field but was 6-for-8 at the free throw line. Woolbright tallied a career-best 17 points and 15 rebounds, 10 of which came on defense. Travion McCray also finished in double figures with 15 points followed by Marcus Banks with 11.

Jr. Clay led Tennessee Tech with 15 points as Kenny White, Jr. (14), Keishawn Davidson (10), and Daniel Ramsey (10) also finished in double figures. Clay corralled a team-best eight rebounds.

With the Catamounts holding a 58-55 advantage with 3:46 to play in regulation, a Clay 3-pointer sparked an 8-0 run with a Mamoudou Diarra layup putting Tennessee Tech ahead 63-58 with 35 seconds to go. The Catamounts didn't go quietly, using a Woolbright jumper on the ensuing possession to pull within two, 63-60 with just over 30 seconds left. John Pettway was fouled but missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with Robinson controlling the defensive rebound. Robinson was left open at the top of the arc as he drained the game-tying 3-pointer with 18 seconds left. Tennessee Tech had one last chance in regulation but Pettway missed a layup with six seconds to play. White, Jr. grabbed the rebound but missed a layup and Woolbright pulled down a critical defensive rebound to force overtime.

In the extra session, the Catamounts dashed out to a 67-63 advantage just over a minute into the period before the Golden Eagles tied the contest with 2:53 to play. After nearly a minute without any points, Woolbright drew a foul at the 1:50 mark and made the ensuing free throws to put WCU ahead for good. Tennessee Tech came up empty on their next possession as Robinson pulled down a defensive rebound and would later be fouled with free throws giving WCU a 71-67 advantage with 48 seconds left. Tennessee Tech got no closer the rest of the way as the Catamounts made timely free throws and played strong defense to secure the win.

WCU opened the game on a 5-1 run and held a game-high nine-point lead, 12-3, following a McCray layup at the 13:46 mark of the opening half. Tennessee Tech went on a 9-0 run, tying the game on a Ramsey jumper just before the midpoint of the half. A Joe Petrakis dunk sent the Catamounts into halftime with a 25-23 lead.

Ramsey opened the second half scoring on a jumper 14 seconds into the frame as the Golden Eagles claimed a 41-33 lead after a Davidson 3-pointer with 13:26 to go. Tennessee Tech's lead hovered between two and eight points for nearly the next seven minutes before a Ramsey jumper gave the visitors a 52-45 advantage with 6:39 left. McCray drained a 3-pointer that sparked a 13-3 Catamount run and set the stage for the game's exciting conclusion.

For the game, WCU finished 24-for-73 (32.9 percent) from the field with an 11-for-38 mark (28.9 percent) behind the 3-point line and a 15-21 (71.4 percent) finish at the free throw line. Tennessee Tech was 27-for-78 (34.6 percent) from the field, 6-for-26 (23.1 percent) behind the 3-point line, and 9-for-12 (75 percent) at the free throw line. WCU outrebounded Tennessee Tech 52-49.

The Catamounts host mountain rival UNC Asheville on Saturday at 2 p.m.
