Catamounts Defeat Presbyterian in Exhibition 2-1

Officially opens season Thursday vs. Charlotte

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – After 468 days without playing a match, Western Carolina women's soccer was back on the pitch Sunday defeating Presbyterian 2-1 in an exhibition match at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

Turning Point:
Tied 1-1 in the second half, senior Regan Ward scored the go-ahead goal at the 53rd mark off a corner kick by Summit Dann.

 Individual Leaders
  • Sophomore Rea Syska scored the first goal of the game for the Catamounts.
  • Ward closed out the game with the second goal of the game.
  • Presbyterian's Kori Lawrence scored the lone goal for the Blue Hose.
Inside the Box Score
  • The Catamounts got on the board at the 19th minute of the first half. Lindy Morgan took a shot that bounced off the top of the post. The ball bounced around the front of the goal and Syska zeroed in on it and tapped it in from a yard out on the right side of the goal.
  • Presbyterian answered two minutes later with Lawrence's goal.
  • Both teams battled through the remainder of the first half and into the second.
  • At the 53rd minute, Western Carolina was awarded a corner kick on the right side. Dann sailed the ball to the left side of the goal and Ward headed it in for the score.
  • Western Carolina had 16 shots while Presbyterian had three.
  • Senior Natalia Icen was in goal for the full 90 minutes and picked up the exhibition win. 

Up Next
Western Carolina officially opens the 2021 spring season on Wednesday (Feb. 17) afternoon hosting Charlotte at 3 p.m. at the Catamount Athletic Complex. The match was moved from Thursday due to impending inclement weather and will be broadcast on ESPN+ (paid subscription required).
