Softball Competes in Troy Invitational This Weekend

Catamounts take on Troy and Austin Peay

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball travels to Troy, Ala. this weekend to compete in the Troy Invitational Feb. 19-21. The Catamounts will take on Austin Peay and host Troy.

 AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • Western Carolina swept the first Southern Conference weekly awards of the season. Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers was named SoCon Pitcher of the Week and junior Bailey Huneycutt was honored with the SoCon Player of the Week award. 
  • The Catamounts open the season with a record of 2-2. WCU won its first two games of the season, defeating Alabama State and North Alabama, and dropped the final pair of games to Tennessee Tech. 
  • Eilers leads the Catamount pitching squad with a .69 ERA. In 13 innings pitched, she has given up just one earned run and has struck out 13. 
  • Senior Addie Pate and Huneycutt are each hitting .400 or above in the first four games. Pate has a .417 batting average with five hits and a pair of doubles. Huneycutt has a .400 batting average with four hits, a double, and a home run. 
  • As a team, WCU has a .234 batting average with nine extra-base hits (seven doubles and two home runs).
  • Western Carolina's pitching staff gave up only three extra-base hits in the first four games of the year – all doubles. 
  • The Catamounts are 2-0 all-time against Austin Peay. The two teams last met in 2016 with WCU winning 5-2. 
  • Western Carolina and host Troy meet for only the second time. Troy won the lone meeting 4-1 in 2014. 
 
 AN INSIDE LOOK AT OPPONENTS:
  • Host Troy is 4-1 to open the 2021 season. In the Trojan's first home tournament of the season last weekend they swept the tournament coming out of the weekend with a 4-0 record. In a mid-week match-up with Liberty, Troy suffered its first loss of the season 3-1 against the Flames. 
  • Austin Peay opens the 2021 season at the Troy Invitational. Austin Peay was picked to finish sixth in the OVC.
