Softball Travels to Charlotte for First Pitch Classic

Third tournament of the season

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball competes in its third tournament of the season this weekend, Feb. 27-28, traveling to Charlotte, N.C. for the First Pitch Classic hosted by Charlotte. The Catamounts will play a doubleheader with the 49ers on Saturday and will face them again on Sunday before tangling with Longwood to close out the tournament on Sunday.

 AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
  • The first game against Charlotte will be the 13th meeting between Western Carolina and the 49ers. The Catamounts swept the doubleheader in Cullowhee on Mar. 27, 2009, winning the first game 16-8, in five innings, and claiming the nightcap 7-0. WCU has won nine of the last 10 meetings. 
  • Western Carolina and Longwood meet for just the second time. The two teams scored 21 runs between them in the lone meeting on Feb. 11, 2012, with the Lancers coming out on top 11-10. 
  • Western Carolina is coming off a tough slate of games at the Troy Invitational. The Catamounts are currently 2-6 on the season. 
  • Junior Myra Twitty had a bombastic end to the tournament as she hit a three-run home run against Austin Peay, in the final game, as WCU's comeback fell short, 7-5. In her four at-bats, Twitty has two hits, a run scored, a home run, and four RBI. 
  • As a team, Western Carolina has 42 hits on the season with 14 for extra bases, 10 doubles, and four home runs. 
  • Bailey Huneycutt and Anna-Paige Pelfrey each lead WCU with six hits. Pelfrey has a .375 batting average while Huneycutt is at .286. 
  • Rookie Caitlin Griffin came into the game in relief in a pair of games last week tossing three innings and allowing just one hit and did not allow a run. 
  • Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers leads the team in strikeouts with 26. 
 
 AN INSIDE LOOK AT OPPONENTS:
  • Freshman Kiyah Garrett helped propel Charlotte to a walk-off win against ECU on Wednesday after hitting a bases-clearing double to center field. Garrett went 2-for-4 at the plate and totaled a career-high four RBIs in the game. Madelyn Wright and Nicole Bowman also collected two hits apiece against the Pirates. Lindsey Walljasper pitched her fourth complete game en route to her team-leading third win of the season. She also leads with a 3.94 ERA and 11 strikeouts in a conference-leading 32.0 innings pitched. Cori Henderson still leads the team in batting with a .409 average, while Garrett leads with her seven RBIs. Four Niners - Garrett, Henderson, Bailey Vannoy, and Kourtney Gremillion - all have three doubles each. 
  • Longwood will play six games this weekend, four of which will be at the Gamecock Invitational on Friday and Saturday then two more on Sunday at the First Pitch Classic. Going into the weekend, Longwood is 1-3 getting a huge 3-2 win against No. 16-ranked Georgia on Feb. 20. One Lancer is batting over .300 as Sydney Jacobsen is hitting .333 with four hits, a triple, and two RBIs. Alexis Wayland leads the team with four RBIs. In the circle, Sydney Backstrom holds a 5.51 ERA over 16.1 innings pitched with 11 strikeouts, while Leigha Hill holds the team's lone win with a 1-0 record.
