Catamounts Fall to UNCG on Senior Night

Earns No. 7 Seed in SoCon Championship

 Location: Ramsey Center, Cullowhee, N.C.  
 
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball fell 54-42 to UNCG Friday on Senior Night at the Ramsey Center. Before the game, redshirt senior's Lauren LaPlant and Tembre Moates were honored. 
 
The Catamounts will be the No. 7 seed in the upcoming 2021 Southern Conference Championship and will face No. 2 seed Mercer at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, Mar. 4, at the Harrah's Cherokee Center Asheville. 
 
Turning Point:
Western Carolina led by one, 26-25, at the half but UNCG ran away with the game courtesy of an 18-6 third quarter.
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Kyla Allison led the Catamounts with 13 points adding three assists. 
  • Redshirt sophomore Nadia Marshall added 10 points and ripped down five rebounds. 
  • CeCe Crudup's game-leading 16 points paced four UNCG players in double figures. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • After being outscored 16 to eight in the first quarter, Western Carolina battled back with a strong second quarter with 18 points to the Spartans' nine. Lauren LaPlant's 1-of-2 free throws, in the closing seconds of the second quarter, gave the Catamounts a 26-25 lead at the half. 
  • UNCG's 14-0 run in the third quarter was the catalyst for the Spartans. 
  • Western Carolina shot 32 percent from the field while UNCG was at 42 percent. 
  • UNCG ripped down 40 rebounds to Western Carolina's 32. 
  • The Spartans connected on six three-pointers while the Catamounts had just two. 
  • Neither team found much success at the free-throw line as both hovered around 50 percent. 
 
 News & Notes
  • Allison has scored in double figures in three-straight games and five of the last seven. She has now scored in double figures in 12 games on the season. 
  • Western Carolina's seventh seed in the upcoming SoCon Championship is the highest seed for WCU since earning the seventh seed in the 2015-16 season.
  • The Catamounts will face Mercer in the conference championship quarterfinals for the third time in four years. In the previous two meetings, the Bears were the No. 1 seed.
